Hi Geroge,
This one remainds me of the 'BIRDS' - Hitchcock's horror movie. Everyone of them is eyeing on the camera ready for an attack !
Regarding the two different shots - I like both of them. I also can see what Justin is trying to convey.
regards, ken.

This is a wonderful shot George, I really like the perspective of multi-bird shots, It gives a 3D Look when you keep them all in focus like this, I dont really agree with the portrait landscape rule of too busy when It comes to birds, Some of my favorite shots are multi-bird shots and I have never found them to be too busy. If you took this shot and removed all the gulls except the closest one, had it perfectly centered fully captured, you would have a less interesting shot, (see my last shot, It is a hawk, but rather colorless with a colorless dull backround, not much attention paid to it) but The way this shot is now, you have a more eye catching shot that gets your imagination going when you look at it.
I agree there are times when you present a bird, that one has not seen before, It is better to present it in a way that viewers that are seeing it for the first time can get a good look at the species. This shot to me is perfect and I have not captured a multi with enough depth or detail like this to even look at twice..

Much better =) I think what I wrote may have come across wrong; I didn't explain very well. Birds are our classic image of freedom and grace, so to crop so tightly, gives the feeling of confinement - that makes more sense I think.
And as for the image you just posted, it is exactly what i had imagined.

Justin--Thank you for your interesting thoughts on the picture. I appreciate your perspective. My own aesthetic is different, though, tending often towards compositions that many people find "busy." In fact, I have begun consciously to crop some portrait shots more radically for a less formalistic effect. In this case, though, I just fired away--bang, bang, bang--with a brand-new lens. The results yielded what I thought were fairly several interesting shots. What do you think of this one?

I know exactly what you mean when you say your reflexes were finally fast enough, these birds are everywhere, but quite ellusive at the same time. I am happy you caught it, butas I am sure you aware (with images like "close up II") that when it comes to photography, it is imperative that you capture the full animal, or at least compose such that the animal looks good.
Here, however, i like the shot, it is very busy and quite impressive to be honest, but I cannot focus on anything; I look at the closest gull and see it is not all in the frame, so I keep looking - there is not one bird in full view, and it is this that detracts from a fantastic photograph.
As I said, i am sure you are aware of this, and maybe this was intentional - this is only my perspective.
- Justin
