Great idea re the tutorial. Wonderful save. The cool thing about resurrecting these dark shots is that you get a unique mood, and it makes me think sometimes that perhaps I should be working in the dark more often...lol.

The explanation explains why it has a little bit of red in the eye that is a bit unnatural. Well, you were right to work on this picture, the composition is simply lovely! Very serene...

Angelo, yes I use blend modes a lot. This one didn't require it, and I think if I had used the screen blend on this, then the grain would've have been too excessive.

Nice tutorial, Judi.
Glad you kept the shot. It is a nice (if a little sad-looking) pose.
I like the work you have done with PS. Do you use layers with different blending modes (e.g. "screen")?
Also, I start work on my images mainly in 16-bit mode and to Levels + Curve before switching to 8-bit mode do do layers etc. This is because PS 6 does not support certain (most) operations in 16-bit mode...

It is very good, a sad far away look, quite haunting, and the dark colours add to this. Excellent work from the original, and I will have to read the tututial properly. -I missed the first one, which upload was it on Judi? Margaret

Step 4.
Select the lips and feather slightly to prevent sharp edges.
Add an adjustment layer - Colour Balance.
Add a little colour, usually red and yellow to bring up the
lips a bit.
And that is it. I could have made it a little more lighter
and removed the orange/yellow hue but I actually liked it
liked this. It has given it a soft feel to the image.
So there you go...maybe you can save that shot you liked
after all.

Step 3.
Add an adjustment layer - Hue/Saturation
Here I just slid the Hue slider up to 28 to give a nice skin
tone.
Here is the resulting shot. Looking better so far.

Step 2.
Add an adjustment layer - levels.
Drag the black triangle slightly towards the centre. Drag the white triangle slightly towards the centre but a
little more than the black triangle. Drag the grey triangle slightly towards the left.
This has lightened up the image just that little bit more.
Here is the resulting shot.

|
Step 1.
Add an adjustment layer - curves.
Grab the middle of the line and take it up towards the top
left corner stopping about halfway between the corner and
the original line placement. This has lightened up the
image slightly.
The beauty about using Adjustment Layers is that as you
continue into the image you can always double click on
any Adjustment Layer and alter the settings without
having to undo every step since the original setting.
Here is the resulting shot.
