I agree with your last comment, John... Sometimes extra detail is almost detrimental to certain kinds of images, and I think this is one of them... I think the stark, "silent" white of the snow really adds the perfect contrast to the action of the cats, making it more abstract in effect - as a High Key image treatment... So my vote goes with this version as well... Excellent work.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the updated version.
I agree with Bob that there is a loss of detail in the highlights and am posting yet another version here that addresses that complaint.
I don't think I really improved on the image any though as the shadows under the cats now seem uneaven to me and look somewhat un-natural (they are darker at the edges than they are in the centre. I tried to eliminate this side effect but this is the best I could come up with. I still kind of like the image above best.

Wonderful shot, and I agree that this is much better than the 1st. The only thing I don't think is an improvement is that you lost the majority of the few spots of snow-texture you had around the cats. IMO, it leaves an almost to pure background.
I don't know what features paintshop pro has, but can you make a selection of the cats, than invert the selection and make a layer adjustment using color or level sliders to remove the blue cast without losing this detail in the snow?

Love this picture. I've looked at it several times and it makes me smile each time. I have to agree that the white snow is much better than the blue snow you had in the other shot.
I really like the action with the cats and the overall uniform lighting.
Keep up the good work.

I did compare this to your earlier version and this is a vast improvement on a great capture. I initially thought on seeing this the you might have blown out the detail in the snow but I can see that snow really is pristine saving for the few tracks created by Jenny and Cougar. I do like their placement in the frame and as Alisa noted, their activity serves as a very nice contrast to the stillness created by the snow. Very nice use of the space of the snow to create this contrast. Way to go.

Much better and truer colors. Levels BTW will do the same thing.

Great improvement on an already strong image! I always appreciate how you provide very specific information on how you manipulate your images to produce the final effect. This is a learning site, and your comments are very helpful to me. Thanks!
