Hi Jay! Many thanks for your comment. With all these sorts of shots, I find that after the first few I can judge the timing reasonably well. The drops here are from a plastic drinking straw with my finger held over the top end: lift finger, milk drops... John

This picture is so clear, how did you time it so right?

In reference to your question,
Flash On Flash Type External E-TTL
This shot is a great composition. I actually like the texture the diginoise adds. But the framing and angle are perfect.

Very nice indeed, John. I've been trying this with water drops, but I can never seem to get everything sharp, only half of the circle. You have inspired me to keep trying. Great colours, too. Cheer, Ann.

Well, John, I only know about him mainly through some of his relatives that I met years ago and through a professional association--also years ago--with a mutual friend. Your shot here and his famous milkdrop pictures have remarkable similarities. Again--congratulations!

Dr Edgerton? I had to go and Google the guy, neandertal that I am. And I must say, what that guy was doing in the year I was born (giving not too much away here...) is impressive!

You are exploring a fascinating side of photography, one that's completely unfamiliar to me--the capture of a frozen moment in time that the naked eye could never catch. This is not just technical virtuosity it's a really beautiful image. Whatever time and effort it took to capture it was worth it! For my favourites!!

Jim, many thanks for your comment. How do I time it right? Well, I'm not sure how many shots I took during this session, but I spent about two hours at it. Each time I took three shots, then checked the results. I found that I could quickly "tune in" to the right time to press the shutter. However, I was dropping the drips from a straw, by releasing my finger from the open end at the top. And the timing was of course affected by the height of the straw above the bowl. Also, the height and angle of the straw could lead to very different shapes of splash. That probably doesn't really help very much, does it?! John

Really beautiful. The color and the texture are super. The stop-action is most impressive. All this with no big studio set-up--most impressive. When it comes to this kind of shot, you are the man! Move over Dr. Edgerton! ;-) Best regards, --George
