This was taken about 2 weeks after 9/11. I was compelled to go as close as I could, even though the fire was still burning so it smelled awful and I had my one year old son in a backpack carrier. There were signs up that cameras would be confiscated, so I was really nervous about having my cameras out. The national guardsman in the foreground was watching me very intently and signalled me to move along. I believe that this was as far west as I was able to go on Rector Street, looking north.
