Here is an example of a first quarter moon from August of 2001. Notice how many craters are visible along the terminator.

Very nice for a shot of the full moon. A full moon is a low contrast target, since it is basically directly lit by the sun. Try this same shot near the quarter moon and you will see much detail along the lunar terminator (line between day and night). There will be more going on with the play between light and shadow.
