Good action shot with goalmouth excitement. Ron,try a exposure at a slower shutter speed so you can see the speed of the stick and the puck. Just an idea. Regards.Robert

"Highest shutter speed"-- What I have done is to go to shutter priority and then increase the shutter speed until it meters at my largest aperture. Then I'll take a few test shots and check the histogram as I gradually increase the shutter speed. The camera will register underexposure, but as long as the shadows aren't clipped in the histogram I can correct the exposure in RAW conversion and get very satisfactory results. This is the main reason to shoot RAW for me with the easy WB correction being an added benefit. Since I have a constant aperture lens this works very well for me. With a variable aperture you would have to set exposure using your slowest aperture at the telephoto end to allow you to zoom without worrying about underexposure or having to change the shutter speed. "Shooting in the raw"-- I actually find shooting RAW to be faster and more powerful for post processing for WB correction and exposure adjustment. As far as actual shooting/recording times neither my D70 or D200 have a problem keeping up during RAW capture, though it does fill up a card faster. I don't know how well/fast Canon gear handles RAW capture.

Thank you for taking the time to comment Eric. "Anticipate the action"--can do. "Keep the ISO low"--not so easy. My lens is F4 or 5.6 so the ISO goes up. I thought that Noise Ninja did a fair job of removing the noise but I do sacrifice detail. "Highest shutter speed"-- really? You set your shutter speed for say 1/1000 and hope that you have enough light? "Shooting in the raw"--I can do but don't for expediancy sake. I have good sucess playing with wb in post. Does it degrade the detail? Anyway thanks for discussing. My only criticism of your hockey shots would be the wb seems off. You got great detail, sharp, and timely action. Regards Ron.

Nice shot. I don't know if I can give much advice on better action shots as I'm just giving it a try myself, but my approach thus far has been to try to anticipate the action, keep the ISO as low as possible, and set the camera to shutter priority mode at the highest shutter speed keeping the lens wide open or close to avoid distracting backgrounds. I've also been shooting in RAW to give myself a little extra leeway in exposure and to be able to more accurately set white balance in conversion without having to mess around too much in PS and degrade other parts of the picture.
