Composition and subject material here are just too perfect!!! I'm not that concerned with the face shadow . . . the effect is still VERY good and the DOF narrows the viewer's attention perfectly . . . I Like it! Hope to see more from you soon!

Very nice Rina,
Quite an original pose for a portrait. There has already been so much in depth analysis on this, it's hard to pick anything original. So I will simply agree with Gustavo and Hugo on the choice of light. I think what has happened is the back/side light has given you a somewhat flat appearance in the face area. If you get a chance to do something like this again, you could try a very weak fill - in - flash. Sometimes even a weak fill-in will leave shadows where you don't want them, but you could give it a try.

As one that adores books this is a wonderful capture. The softness is enchaning, displaying the appeal, that books cantake you to far away places if you find the right one. Beautiful young model you have employed in this capture. I just want to see wich book she picks!!! Great mood and capture for a library add.

the olive harvest..
my dear, i believe hat this one is a very "simple" great shot.. the inddor mode, in a room, with the librarian place.. just a perfect dof that increase the space the work on the levels!
is too much appreciated and (for me) very wlel realized. the delicate touch of softness..

Ahhh Hugo... hindesight is 20/20 :) My thinking behind converting to tones was removing the colour distractions from the bookshelf as opposed to creating atmosphere. Bad judgement call on my part as I see on closer comparison, that the colour version is brighter on her face. I've attached it for you.
As for nit picking, my friend if you hadn't, I would never have considered the difference a lower point of view makes or even the inclusion of more bookshelf. The elbow of course! Good grief, how did I miss that, eh? Totally glaring at me now :))

You know, looking back on it, I think my mistake lies in converting to tones in the first place. That's where I've lost light on her face, the original is brighter. So glad I posted in CC. Hiya sweetie......I love the point of focus of the hand against the books and that the face is in shadow is not a big deal for me. The facial expression is kinda dreamy looking and suggests your daughter is engaged in some fanciful thinking. So for me the shadowed face is great and if the face had been softer focussed that too would have worked for me. The very light sepia tone is especially nice for I think it is in total keeping with libraries or bookshops. I do quite like what Susie has done but the face has taken on a totally different tone to the rest of the shot and this is often the penalty we pay when postwork gets a little heavy. Yes, for me you have a lovely candid shot of your pretty daughter who is almost, almost as beautiful as her Mum. Well done Rina on a wonderfully composed candid with a perfect POF and DOF.
I too am reduced to getting candid shots of all the adult members of my family and having to take pot luck in their expressions...mark you I have had some humourous results as they realise what I am doing just has I hit the release:):):)A great big hug to you my sweet and my very very best wishes as always......Rayxx

Hi Rina,
Apart from the already mentioned light on this woman's face think this is a very good shot; the DOF limits the view nicely to what's important, placing the attention on the hand holding the book. Also, I feel it enhances the perspective, fading the image out a bit, allowing for a more prominent role of the woman in the composition.
Personally, the sepia toning doesn't really work for me, but that's a subjective dislike. In most cases, sepia is being misused to create an atmosphere that isn't always there nor needed in an image. In this case I actually don't think it imposes an atmosphere, but I'm not convinced it does add to this image either. Maybe a plain B&W would've created the same feel.
As a suggestion, I think there are one or two things that could (arguably) add a bit more "tension", both based on my assumption that including the elbow in the composition would create a stronger unity in this photo:
1. A slightly lower Point of view, removing the eye-level connection as well as the involvement of the photographer (if you see what I mean. Maybe I better explain.... I feel that this eye-level Point of view does also create an interaction between you and the woman. By taking it from a few inches lower, I believe you could've "broken" that connection)
2. A change of image aspects, also including a bit more of the rows of books on the left, preferably also using the DOF, in order not to disrupt the perspective.
Either way, I'm just nit picking, searching for needles in a hay stack. It's a very strong image, and I like it a lot (otherwise I wouldn't have rambled on like this...)

Rina I would try selecting around her face then go into levels and pull the right arrow over to where the image looks right. I like this method as opposed to just brightning that part because you don't lose detail. I'll attach a quick copy of what I mean.
Love the image by the way. This one just lets the mind make up stories about the subject. What is she thinking? Where would she like to be? Very nice!

You mean a filter on the lens? Hmmm... hadn't thought of that. Could dick around with levels in PS too, I suppose, but that would be a pain and possibly disasterous.... Will let you know if someone leaves an alternative suggestion. Thanks Laurie :)

Well captured Rina... I agree with Gustavo's comments about the light on the face... I'd like to know what to do about this actually... it's properly exposed and everything but... wrong. Possibly a filter of some sort? Maybe a warming filter would allow the face to be brought up slightly...
