Ian - if you have taken both photos both close-up and further away, you're the best person to judge which is more effective!
Looking at it again, I think that the sandstone is a good background in terms of the lines across it - my main issue it's the darkness and the colours that don't quite compliment the foreground. Maybe exposing the sandstone separately, or else subtley adjusting its colours in PS would help the two areas tie together.
I don't have the experience or expertise to offer any real advice, I'm afraid, but as I said, you as the phtoographer are the one best placed to make judgements based on what was there! I love taking photos in Scotland, and your picture's making me want to go out and take some right now - so thanks for that :)
All the best

Good considered comment Rick. I do indeed have the very version you suggest on my files. i think the reason I prefer this view is the contrast of round and flat shapes together with the sheer variety of subtle colours. The wall actually shows the battering that it receives from these pebbles as they clatter and grind against the rock. The black hole is just intended to provide a final resting point for the eye. It is unfortunately a geological fault I wasn't able to avoid yet still include the wall.

This grabs my attention, too - I see what you saw in it! The soft light really works, as you say, on the multi-coloured and sea-smoothed stones.
I'm not sure what I think of the sandstone behind, especially with the large black hole in the centre of the shot, and the black creeping in on the rock at the top of the photo. The colours don't seem nearly as interesting or subtley changing as the smaller stones in the foreground, which are the reason you took the photo, and makes it feel a little unbalanced to my eye.
I'm not sure what to suggest on it, but maybe a closer photo of the stones, showing perhaps fewer of them, would be more effective. It's a definite eye-grabber though :)

This really captures my attention for some reason...the shapes and colours of the rocks are really in an interesting array.
