The colourful headboards of this cemetery, are carved with portraits of the deceased (or scenes from their lives) and inscribed with limericks, also relating to life of the departed.
Thank you, Johnathan, for your kind advice! Romania is my homecountry, but not all of it is known to me, though I lived there 34 years.Maramures was a little bit too far from Bucharest. Many thanks for your comment. I have some further images of this cemetery, which I will post over the next few days. Can I make a couple of suggestions for when you plan your visit... 1) If you can travel independantly, the coach trips turn up, spend 20 minutes and then away again. I spent a couple of hours there and could easily of spent longer. 2) Visit when a service is being held ~ Sunday is good. This is a small church, the congregation spills out into the cemetery and with the women wearing traditional costume ~ well. This is somewhere very special...
What a pity that you are not a contributor! You could have posted a panoramic from this famous cemetery in northern Romania. I never reached there, but I plan to in the future. And I saw a lot of explanations about this cemetary in a documentary on the Japanese TV.An interesting journalistic shot! Gabriela
