Thanks for the advice, a substandard flatbed scanner has something to do with the lighting, but I agree with your idea just haven't tried much pushing or pulling yet.

I love the composition here. It's so perfect, From the cactuses on the left side of the frame to those two little hills further back to the break in the clouds near the top. The thing that doesn't work for me is the lighting. I see some very deep shadows with no detail and muddy dark areas. It seems like the sun was really bright that day and it created a lot of contrast. So your highlights end up being blown out and the shadow area lacking in detail. There is a much more complicated method of doing this but basically what you should have done was overexpose and underdevelop. It's hard to say exactly how much but in conditions like this I'd say overexpose at least one full F/stop and underdevelop maybe 15%. That will contract the tones so they won't be so out of range to print.
