Amazing creatures nessa, and they LOVE to climb trees! I spent an hour watching a mother black bear and two cubs fifty feet up a tree eating seeds. Whenever wildlife appears within the park, traffic stops to watch. That's where the "jam" comes from. Depending on the season, the roads (few) are impassable for miles. -john

Thanks DC, I was completely out of my element in this area of the world, and willing to admit it. I have experience with the black bear of the Adirondacks in NYS, but other than that I just regurgitated what I was told. I'm always pleased to get an education (and comments from you!) thank you so much! -john

Great shot John!
This does not look to be a brown, or grizzly bear -luckily- since they are not for the timid. Black bears (though they come in brown too) are not nearly as dangerous. They have also been called Kermode bears, Cinnamon bears, or Glacier bears, but they are all black bears. The black bear is around 4 to 7 feet from front to back, and 2 to 3 feet high at the withers. They have small eyes, rounded ears, and a long snout. They have a large body, a short tail, and shaggy hair. They're still powerful but they are smaller than grizzly bears. They DO have a hump but it's a smaller shoulder hump.
I spent many a day in my youth feeding bears in Yellowstone . . . and these guys can all be dangerous (as I'm sure you know).

I love the capture and the DOF . . . Very very nice!!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Damn good question Dave! I do know that he was big, had sharp teeth and claws and could run much faster than I, and oh yeah, he looked hungry............-john
