Hahaaaa, indeed Andre! Start talking about a photo and end up talking about the weather in Tanzania ;-)
But to tell you the truth, I have the impression that it does good in some quite unexpected way, since sometimes (also my) wrong thoughts are commented/corrected and so we gain some more knowledge.
Have a nice Sunday,
Nick

Thanks Nick, I think both methods have their advantages. ps I know how you feel with the side notes. I end up doing the same thing sometimes. It's easy to get all wound up in detail with our comments sometimes :) Andre

Hi Andre!
Just on a side note, there is a very interesting antithesis between two methods to diminish the direct visibility of the background, enhancing thus the main subject which often lies on the foreground.
One method is this which worked very well here, namely to let the background go out of focus in such an extend that it remains recognizable but lacks sharpness. This is a favorite method of our times, I have the feeling, quite contrary to another method that got a bit forgotten.
This second method is to take the wide angle, go very near the main subject, and shoot using the exaggeration of depth and distance that a wide angle creates to send the background far away, making it not as soft but rather diminishing the size of objects that are there. Enhancing the main subject through creating depth and that kind of "empty space" behind it.
I am a bit biased towards this second method, since I seem to like distance and "emptyness" a bit more than the somewhat more "plain" depiction of the first method.
Oops, the side note became longer than the comment, I'm afraid! ;-)
Best wishes,
Nick

Thanks for the nice comment Nick, I think you answered your own question in this comment. "The background is a very nice "canvas" on which the contours of the foreground take shape very clearly". If all in the photo were sharp, we could become over-loaded with detail and not focused on the main subject. Andre

A very nice composition here, Andre, especially that contrast between the very soft and textureless mushrooms and the plant that is so rich in texture. I can't really decide if it would be better to increase DoF for getting the plant in focus too - I guess that both variants (plant in and out of focus) have their own benefits. The background is a very nice "canvas" on which the contoures of the foreground take shape very clearly.
Very nice work, especially considering that they were so tiny.
Best wishes,
Nick

Thanks Marcus, I took a trip back there and got a shot of these guys two weeks later. I just posted the result. They've grown a bit :) You're right... I wouldn't eat them. Andre

Thanks Jon, I am very pleased with this one. The light and the moist surroundings worked very well with almost no manipulation on this one at all. I've been spending a lot of time at Pearson myself lately. Just dropping off and picking up for me. At least that's a bit less stressful :) Andre

Lovely. I had been going to say it would have been nice to see that branch in the upper left staying in focus, but seeing how small the subjects were (10 mm) I'm thinking it's a pretty nice piece of work just as it is.
I was in your neighbourhood last week (okay, well, the boarding area at Pearson, flying home from Montreal). That's all I ever see of Toronto, unfortunately.

Thanks Dave, I found that digital photography site that had the fix for chromatic aberations in it very usefull. It seems to be a very common problem with the Fuji lens that we have on the S5000. Andre

Very nice texture and perspective on these, Andre! Great colours and composition, too. Thanks for your extensive comment on my "Splashdown", shot. I know it wasn't the greatest, but I'm working on it! Dave.

Hi Kes, My Grandmother used to tell us not to eat anything that had spots on it. She used to say that if it was plain on the top and smooth underneath, (rather than finned underneath) then it was okay. But don't take my word for it!!! She also used to put garlic on the door to keep vampires away :) Even though these look like mushrooms, I think they were some kind of tree fungus, just starting to sprout. Andre

Thanks Rina, I really liked the way this one came out. As you say, the contrast of the textures must be the key to this one. Greenish, rough moss versus the smooth, almost flesh coloured mushrooms. Andre

Superb details and lighting, Andre. That covers about everything. :) We are past the mushroom season here but they do make an interesting subject. If only I could tell which ones are edible. :)
