Thanks for the link, Christine, it was very interesting! The historic Coast Guard photo at that site shows all the buildings that were there...that was one crowded rock! Apparently the light was hung off the front of the building (with windows) in your shot, and not the top of the other structure. Maybe it was the 20,000 gallon water tank that was mentioned.
I used to have a romantic notion that a lighthouse would be the thing to operate...until I discovered that they were sometimes required to go out on the water during storms. :)

AH HA!! You're correct. I spent the last few hours googling variations of "struture at northern foot of golden gate bridge" and came accross a geographical guide of the area. The area is called Lime Point, and there was a light house there. Here is some info if you are interested: http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=146
Thanks for your interest in this photo, it encouraged me to do some research. I love me a good mystery ;))

Hi Christine, I did a little internet searching and couldn't find anything that referenced a similar building with a photo. It looks like it may have had a lighthouse on the structure on the right at one time. Kes

Thanks for your comments, Kes. I don't know what it was used for. I could guess somesort of guard structure, or maybe a ferry landing? I'll have to do some research... but it is a cool looking structure (I love things that are falling apart, as long as they aren't MINE!)
