This seemingly innocent little ant is not to be messed with! This one is about 1 1/4" ( 3 cms ) long and those pincers at the front are not for decoration. I have been bitten by one of these little 'darlings' with my whole ankle and foot DOUBLING in size with most excruciating pain for about 2 days. The same species ( hymenoptera pages) have a red colored variety, which DO NOT get on, as I found out as a child when I tried to 'introduce' them to each other....I think that was when I was bitten... Unlike most ither ants that forage in groups, this species hunts solitarily and is big enough to bring home what he fancies. On the first comment here, I will post another ( better) pic of our little friend...
Hi M, I have attached ( I hope ) a pic of a Red Bull Ant which are the same size of the Blackies I posted. Those mandibles are not for show and I have a healthy respect for them! Kind regards JD
