Thank You Jan.... I agree on both parts you btrought up the $$ and the privacy... oh and the erosion of the cliffs, and beaches.. as it seems like you've got a loss of beach and land wherever you have a beach, cliffs or the ocean...:(

Michele- here is the "good" type of beach construction-- attached is a photo of a 7x24 beach erosion recovery project to restore the shoreline.

I was at the beach last weekend in Maryland & Delaware and noticed similar close-to-public construction of some condos and other buildings.
Two things came to mind: (1) Safety issues and how local building codes deal with both flooding and beach erosion; and (2) privacy. Folks are paying big bucks for ocean-side lots close to public beach access and that would drive me nuts; having people practically on your porch while going to the beach.
And yet.... the water in your photo is so beautiful and I can imagine how the surf sounds.

I know what you mean, Michele. I would love to be able to feel the ocean so nearby with all my senses, but I would dislike not having any privacy, and I also think that it´s important not building houses on all shorelines and giving nature a rest.
