About A part of the house of the Mullicks - who were once the Rajas of Kolkata. While the major part of the palace is very carefully maintained, this part has not got any maintenance for years, probably due to a family feud. Very surprisingly, it still has some inhabitants - while a couple of courier companies and a plumbing unit have their office in this building's ground floor, a few labourers stay in this house at night. I was speaking to one of them, a bearded person originally from Bihar, who said he wants to stay along here despite the life risks, because staying here gives him the satisfaction of staying in a palace ('Rajbari').

Truly a pictorial representation of "jalsaghar".
The mood, the atmosphere speaks about the current status of Rajas, one of the richest men of Kolkata.

Hi Lex, thanks for your opinion - I created the wide square frame to force the viewer to think more about the photo rectangle, and to create the dark feeling around. I get your point though. Yes, that could have also been an option.

You saw something really dramatic here. Excellent capture but i think the frame is a bit to much. The picture speaks for itself so you didn;t nead the frame anymore. But that is just my opinion. No hard feelings becose overall you have done a great job!

Cheers, Lex.

Yes Sandip, I truly appreciate what you are pointing to - may be that bearded person in front, or may be the doorway with broken furniture all around the staircase going up...

I tried shooting the doorway but there were the courier people started posing for the photo. I tried the bearded man but was using a 50mm lens and it was cloudy so the background has gone really out of focus to create the impact. (I will share that photo later on).

Probably a little wider with more doors/windows and more of the wall would have helped, but there were so many glossy signboards hanging around that I felt those would have spoilt the punch.

I will visit this place once more and try out what you pointed out. Definitely worth a try. Thanks a lot for the well thought comments.

Beautiful colors ... all the shades ... really gel together nicely ... good one ... technically superb

However the story of negligence, emptiness, despair that you depict would have been more visible with another figure may a human one .. or a broken statue ... i don't know .. but the pic in its current form gives only hint of the story .. not the overall feel ... may be i've become less imaginative .... :-)
