Hi Doyle & Darlene... since it is your image we are messing with :)

I was thinking something like this.

I agree this does include cropping the top layer of the sky away. This probably contributes to losing some of the open feel, as you say.
Maybe if the gulls were just a bit bigger in this composition? But then that also gets further and further away from the original intent.

Another Crop

Agreed in Part Andre . . . but the reality is that to move them there must be a crop . . . and where does one crop yet still retain the open feel in this image. Ideally . . . it would be re-shot with the composition in mind as far as locating the gulls lower left . . . but as to this image . . . can it be done? It doesn't seem so - I have tried . . . perhaps you could post an alternative in the comment string that retains the feel of the original??

Season's Best,

Hi Darlene,
What Doyle described was exactly what I was thinking. Move the birds slightly to the left. I still think that might be the way to go. I think he changed the dynamics by going to a sort of square format. Just my opinion, but I think if the gulls were about twice the size they are now and moved slightly to the left you would have a winner. I love the rich greens and the way you have the DOF set up.
What do you think?

I like the way you've caught them standing out against the background so well here, Darlene! The gulls contrast against the dull background is very good.
Dave.

The superb selective focus makes this an excellent wildlife presentation Darlene..I agree with Doyles conclusion after he tinkered with it...great as is

Very nice work Darlene . . . My initial reaction was that the birds should be pulled off-center and to the left . . . (even experimented - see attached). But the more I looked the more I felt you had a Perfect DOF and I think I like the composition here . . . an open feeling abounds. Impressive work.

Season's Best Wishes,
