I think Larry hit the nail on the head about what makes this so good. The low-angle perspective is just great on this. The silhouette of the surfer changes this from merely a fun image in the water to a real composition with a point of focus, action, etc. Really great work.

Wow... thanks for all the responses on this one.
Sanyukta, I tried cropping it as you suggested before uploading this version. I didn't like it that much. You lose the perspective of the surfer paddling up and over the swell.
Larry, this was one of those chance shots. I looked up just in time to see him paddling by and cross in front of the setting sun. I only got this one shot. I think the glow you're seeing is from the sun dipping just below the edge of the incoming swell. The other big part of surfing is the duck dive and I'm hoping the water will clean up a bit to be able to capture a few of those.

Sean: What I like about this is that after having seen about 18 billion surfing shots over the years, in magazines and elsewhere, you somewhow managed to get a totally different perspective than I've seen before. One aspect to its uniqueness is that it's from the surfer's viewpoint, not that of an outside observer. And paddling out is a big part of surfing, not often documented.
I'm curious as to why there appears to be a glow all along the top edge of the water.

Very nice photograph and very sharp.
Maybe if it was cropped a bit from the bottom the human figure would be bolder.
Would look like a commercial ad. for some sports goods or something then.
