About	Red-shouldered Hawks in northern California represent a distinctive subpecies, B.l. elegans, that differs somewhat in habits and apperance from birds of eastern populations. Adults of the race elegans are more richly colored beneath than eastern Red-shouldered Hawks. Although our Red-shouldered Hawks nest in forest-edge and woodlands, theyr forage a great deal from exposed perches well removed from cover. Red-shouldered Hawks within California are thought to be comparatively sedentary. Little movement is evident, and migrants in the classic sense are seldom encountered. Fix & Bezener, 2000.
