About The Koeberg Nuclear Power plant on the west coast of South Africa. If you know the South African context you will realise that the picture could be used by both sides. I tried to select the title to leave it open for interpretation. Currently, South Africans, especially those living in the highveld region (more than 60% of the population) have to endure one of the highest levels of air pollution worldwide due to our country's total dependency on Coal Powered electricity. We have one nuclear power station - and they left us some of the blue sky . . . You can imagine the level of tension we are dealing with here!

With plans for a second nuclear power plant for South Africa making news, I thought that this contribution might help everyone think carefully where we are heading....

Hi Joggie,

Good backlit image, and an excellent composition. I like how the shoreline leads the eye towards the nuclear plant.

I think the sky and fog lack a bit of clarity and crispness; they look a bit smudgy, if you know what I mean. The image is also a bit noisy, especially near the top of the image, which makes me think you did some extensive work on that area...

Hope all is well,

Cheers,

Hugo

A truly great image on many levels Joggie. From a purely aesthetic perspective it is very attractive and beautiful shot. As an image to provoke thought on a very difficult challenging subject it is also very effective. Finding and developing acceptable sources of energy is one of the greatest challenges of this and future generations. The future of this planet is depends on it.
Great job my friend Joggie

A very striking image Joggie- the mist, clouds, silhouette and sparkles really make an atmosphere. As always, good to learn from what you write too.

I know it's a CC image Joggie . . . but it's awesome and I wouldn't know how to improve it. The sparkles and the silhouette accent this . . . descending in the hazy distance . . . and it all makes for a strong image. Impressive.

Doyle I <~~~~~

I must say that your air pollution does make for a fine filter while taking photographs. As in this shot, the haze is very apparent and lends itself to the mood of the picture. Nice job, J.

Best wishes,
Dave

The choice is complex because the human foot print on this earth is huge. One can not help but leave an imprint, no matter the footware. Your's is a tranquil scene with some sense of foreboding in the the strong contrast, dark clouds and the mysterious building, out of place on the shore. I see that the image illustrates the tension you speak of, Joggie!

Thanks Quix for the thoughts - just to give some additional perspective: We have some experimental wind power plants. They do have substantial drwbacks in the South African context though. We do not have winds consistently strong enough to make it feasible. Normally when we have power use peaks like early mornings and late afternoons the wind does not blow while during the rest of the day with strong winds we have oversupply in most regions. The power cannot be store and therefore is a loss for peaking purposes. The other downfall is the high visibility of the wind turbines especially as they have to be placed along our west coast which is the only feasible area - this is prime tourist area with highly sensitive vegetation of which most is endangered - putting up anything here is highly controversial.

Regarding Solar power - you are perfectly right. South Africa (the northern part of the Northern Cape) has the most ideal condition for Solar power plants in the world. I am currently project director for an environmental assessment of a pilot Solar Power plant in this area. The one big drawback of Solar is the footprint space needed for a 100mw Concentrated Solar Power plant is 400 hectares (4 square km). On this area approximately 5000 heliostats are positioned to concentrate the sun unto a central reciever which heats up molten salt, water is used to cool the salt, steam is produced and the steam runs the turbines.

Compare that to a Nuclear plant of 4000mw which needs about 50 hectares for infrastucture and the picture suddenly changes. Fortunately we have large areas of land available in the north which is sparsely populated although it is a popular tourist destination - the choices remains complex!

Very nice justoposition between the man taking a walk (looks he's collecting shells /mussels?) and the power plant. For me, the title and your about make this shot even more powerful.
Ironically, this plant is situated in the Western Cape - where power cuts have been at their worst...
Well done Joggie

Sounds like a bit of 'out of the frying pan & into the fire'

I'm quite a fan of natural energy resources... we have a few wind farms over here & funny thing is that some of the locals have been protesting a wind farm being set up very close by. Difficult one for me because I'm not going to be directly looking at it but to be honest if I had the choice between having a wind farm on my doorstep or a nuclear power plant I'm pretty sure which one I prefer!

The photo here is gorgeous (even though the subject I find rather daunting) Quite like how you've created a tranquil feel from this & yes, shown the gorgeous sky above.

You would think you guys would have a good success rate with solar power over there! :)

Keep well & bright

This would make a great poster for the anti-Nuclear Power movement Joggie, except you've made it look too picturesque. Very well composed and exposed and also very thought provoking. Cheers, Ann.

I like the symbolism in the shot with the mist drifting across in front of the power plant, but it's also a very well done silhouette, and almost contre jour, Joggie!
Dave.

Cracking shot Joggie, well exposed shot with good detail and colour. Well done. Your "About" remarks are spot on to, people should think very carefully of what you speak my friend. Regards Ray.
