Doyle: mate in four? Black or white? I was intrigued by black's solid grip on the bottle of beer!

Thanks John . . .

I agree about the crop . . . like I said . . . problematic at best . . . and a dubious payoff for the effort even if you could make it fly. I think the setting significantly adds to the scene.

Although I was only mentioning the tilt to inquire if you had considered it . . . It's going to have issues as well since it will necessitate a crop and the payoff accents in the background may well not be worth the needed losses in setting from the crop. . . . Besides . . . I'm not sure the scene isn't a bit more natural with the slope in it . . . having seen countless sloping paths and benches.

Lastly . . . Mate in Four! LoL!

Hi Doyle: once again a wonderfully thoughtful and helpful critique.

Regarding the crop: since I explicitly cropped the original image to this composition I tend to disagree with Jan. I tried it but felt the guys needed that space around them.

Regarding the tilt: I thought of it fleetingly but never felt it would work so didn't try it. I was sure the guys would appear to be leaning over. But you have shown that it could indeed work and is certainly worth considering.

Regarding the softness: I don't see it myself, and would be surprised, given my position when I took the photo, if the feet were sharp and the heads were not. Then again, this was taken with the Casio and so there are always likely to be some lens issues.

Overall, as the third in this mini-series, I am pleased with the way it has worked out. I feel I've learnt a little about a new subject, both at the time of shooting and during processing.

Good work in post edit John. I looked into Jan's 'tighter' crop suggestion and initially I agreed with it. Two things - I think - make the suggestion problematic. First - to my eye - a tighter crop must by definition be brought in from the right side . . . and the top to further the composition. Pulling in left and bottom would clearly throw the balance WAY out of whack. But, to do this will leave a distraction in the top right corner by the chained tree.

Then I thought about a 3.75 degree tilt to level the shot along the bench line (see attached) . . . did you consider that? Of course, then a crop would be essential but I think I like the way the tilt seems to accentuate the background slope . . .

Also . . . unless I'm getting old (which may well be) or my glasses are dirty -- I sense a little softness to the image. The sharp clarity in the shoes and feet clear from the detailed tread on the left shoe undersides doesn't seem to be reflected in the more important heads of the players . . . though we're talking very slight at best.

Overall though . . . I really like the image. I might have even considered a little grain to give it the classic feel of film. :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Superb street shot capturing just the right moment. The guy leaning over the one player's shoulder is the element that really adds so much to the scene. B&W perfect choice.
I think I would have preferred a slightly tighter crop.
--Best to you, Jan
