About Once we landed by jet in El Calafate part of Southern Patagonia, the first place we were destined to check out was the famous Perito Moreno Glacier. This is one of the few glaciers that has such easy tourist access and really allows the average individual of non hiking strength to get a chance to see a very active glacier at work. While we sat there from various vantage points, the constant movement of this crushed and malleable ice train, constantly dropped huge chunks of Ice into the Lake with terrific sounding cracks and groans. It exciting to see something so hugely massive so active.

Hi Dave,
Yes, and i hope to go down again in December to sail to the Antarctic to get a feel of some real uninhabited landscape...quick before i get to old...there is just way to much to see out there it is hard to choose. My Daughter works for Westjet, so flying around is a little cheaper and i want to take advantage of it while she is working for them! Newfoundland might be the place to go for the fall...I got my fingers crossed and no money in the bank.....lol...

Hi Tim. Nice to find someone who isn't latitudinally impaired, as I seem to be these days. Have fun in the 'land of the upside-down moon'.

Hi James,
This area of Argentina is stupendous for photo oppertunities. It is hard to drive for more then a few minutes before you are getting out of the car once again to shoot more film. In many ways it is more spectacular then the Canadian Rockies due in part to the warm light and pleasant atmosphere of the local people...never mind the panoramic views to be had from just about any perspective. We flew in to the town El Calafate from Buenos Aires Argentina. Then rented a car from there to go in just about any direction for endless spectacular views. Much of the time we took back roads as that is what i like. But then most of the roads are dirt and pots holes are huge....sound like China?...just a little bit road wise? They don't seem to have many rules of the road other then don't hit any other cars. Everybody drives like they are part of a off road rally.....scary...good thing the roads are wide! To get to the highest mountain areas you need to drive 200 miles from El Calafate to El Cheltan. From there all the hiking is amazingly flatish with easy access to the most dramatic of mountainscapes.
I will be heading to the Antarctic this December from just south of there for a 18 day boat ride, that should be a wicked trip for sure. Nice to hear from you again! Hope all is well and you are not stuck in some office somewhere for to long.

Yes Roger, i usually give these kind of places a wide berth but the landscape was too amazing to be diminished by the tawdry exposure to the presents of tiny humans. But I tried to show the drama and huge overwhelming power of the natural elements of this area where humans are just a small blip in the overall perspective. I will post a Pano of the whole thing today so you can get a full perspective.

The lighting on this ice really makes the colour stand out and it almost has an inner glow! Well captured, Tim!

Thank you for bringing the beauty and power of such exotic places; love the depth of colours and contrast between the roughness of the ice and the crystalline and serene texture of the water.

Exquisite!
