About Billed as one of America's most overlooked (no pun intended) National Monuments, Canyon de Chelly in northeast Arizona could almost be considered nicer than the Grand Canyon. Mostly because stunning views combined with very few tourists make this a great place to explore.

Canyon de Chelly, nestled on the Navajo Nation includes many Anasazi ruins in the shear walls of the canyon.

Reflecting one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes of North America, the cultural resources of Canyon de Chelly include distinctive architecture, artifacts, and rock imagery while exhibiting remarkable preservation integrity that provides outstanding opportunities for study and contemplation. Canyon de Chelly also sustains a living community of Navajo people, who are connected to a landscape of great historical and spiritual significance. Canyon de Chelly is unique among National Park service units, as it is comprised entirely of Navajo Tribal Trust Land that remains home to the canyon community. NPS works in partnership with the Navajo Nation to manage park resources and sustain the living Navajo community.

This is Spider Rocks - twin 800 foot towers of rock isolated from the canyon walls and a site of special significance for the Navajo - according to legend, the Spider Woman lives on top and keeps the bones of her victims there.

Thank you again, Laurie. Next time I will opt to go down in my own truck with a guide (since my dog travels with me, a Jeep tour is out of the question).

I considered trying to go in without the permit and guide and wondered if they would even notice. I thought better of it. A couple of hours later, I saw the police arresting somebody who had gone in without permit/guide. So I guess they are serious.

Love the fact that you gave the bio along with this spectacular photo. You are correct. It is very overlooked and not too many people have ever been there, yet it's only an hour or 2 away from Monument Valley going south. If you do go, make sure to do one of the jeep tours through the bottom. The stop many places along the way to let you out for photo and it's a great ride for the price! Lucky you! I'll probably have to skip my anual trip there this year. DO love those rocks and all the pictographs! Take Care...Laurie

Thanks again, Peter. I didn't use a filter on the camera with the exception of sometimes using a polarizer but I don't know if I used it on this shot.

Now, would I tease you? Would I leave you stranded? I'll let you hold on to Dee for insurance against me leaving you in the middle of nowhere... and you know I'd never leave him.

:)

Thanks, Gary. Took me three trips to this point in different light. Morning, afternoon and evening. Finally got a good one, in the afternoon, but was fighting constant shadows from the partly cloudy sky.

Morning was the worst for this particular scene...

An impressive view, I especially like the way the darkness in the canyon bend contrasts with the sunlit forground. Thanks for the about too. It's important for us to remember that different cultures can actually perceive landmarks in wholly different ways to each other and while we need not accept anyone's folklore as literal, we surely enrich our appreciation of the planet by being aware of and preserving these legends.
Regards, Gary
