Excellent 'use' of oval frame into frame, I like the element of a frame that 'fallows' the main shape of the lighting support here! excellent also the element that the frame 'hug' the mother, as mom hug her baby...
I always firstly saturate my photos, add a bit more contrast and a bit lower brightness and then I desaturate the photos, that makes the tones in greyscale looks more 'different' and so the details...

I hoe you don't mind but I played with your picture a bit... with my own personal style though. I adjusted the levels and also changed color variations a bit. This is such a precious moment you captured, I know they will both love this photo for years to come! You have a great eye... this is just so cute! I LOVE it! :) :)

Alison, thank you so much for your comment and including your revision. I have to learn more about using layes. There is obviously a lot thay can be achieved using tghem. That is something I have not done much with. Santa might be bringing me a book so I can lean more about using PS.

Mary, I am not skilled enough to answer any of your technical questions but to me it looks perfect. I love the framing and how you concentrated the light on the faces of the mother and her child then shaded it out toward the edges. It is a very touching photo. Del.

This picture and portrait of mother-child is fantastic.
First I have to make congrautulzioni for the happy moment and a hug the mom is safe, the more beautiful hot, of the world.
I believe that you have captured a beautiful moment of intimacy ..
In addition to the B / W, safe is better with the use of PS7 conversion "gray scale".
In this way the result is the "b / w", then as in traditional technique using different color filters to emphasize some help.
Depending on the result to be achieved, you can use the filter yellow, red, green and so on..
I you attached a simple result of the conversion "grayscale" and a little touch in the levels.

Beautiful "Madonna" Mary! I wouldn't change a thing. My expertise in Photoshop is most limited, but I find if you use the channel mixer under the adjusting mode you can create a truer, sharper black and tone the whites the way you like. Superb image...just remarkable! Best regards--Bill Voizin

This image is absolutely breathtaking, I believe, as it is. I love the whole concept and it is such a tender moment it holds any viewer's attention, I'm sure.
The frame, lighting and baby with mother are all just stunning! You've done an excellent job.
I looked thru my books and found what I think is a very good procedure for color to b/w conversions. I used it a year or so ago for 10 images I showed here in Orlando and was happy with the results. If you would like a copy of this my email is DwightP980@aol.com and I will send you this article.
I still think it is best to shoot images with a good b/w film i.e. Kodak or Ilford if you know from the moment of image conception you want a b/w image, but the digital sometimes can come very close with post processing.

Hi Elias. I use PS7. To make the shadow around the ellipse and have just the center lit
--use the Elliptical tool to mark the area
--under Select choose Inverse
--under Layer, choose New Fill Layer, then Solid Colour or Gradient to fill in the colouring that you want
--under Layer, choose Layer Style, then Outer Glow
--use the Size tool to get the size you want and click the coloured square to change the colour of the shadow to whatever you wish
I hope I explained it okay. If you need clarification, just ask.

Harry, your comments most definately do not offend in any way. I asked for suggestions and am happy that you took the time to offer yours. I do not have a spot meter. As far as filters--I just bought some recently and have not had the time to really experiment with them. That is something that I hope to be able to do soon. Thanks for the suggestions regarding the lighting and angle. You have given me things to think about and consider for another time.

First let me say that you have truly captured a very special photo here along with a wonderful presentation!
As for your question with regard to B&W I would suggest you shoot in B&W. I have shot many many rolls of Ilford 400 B&W film in my past and learned the "Zone System". Once one gets the hang of the "Zone System" you will better understand how to shoot B&W. Here is a good site that you may want to visit to understand what I'm talking about. http://www.fineimages.org/zone_system.htm
Scroll down to "Gray Scale" and you will find some pretty good info on how to use it.
Hope this is of some use to you.

PS: Marry regards tech suggestions I like to share some with you:) but hope not create any offended feelings because as far I know there always reactions which most misunderstandings cause of a language + photographer’s pride.PS not my true expertise but channels mixture it’s very important. Shooting on B/W mode it's a must experimenting picture settings,example dense areas with week lighting wouldn’t work well but excellent on RGB!
“Filters are very important my fever is Polarizer, Gradual, Yellow filter) spot meter is a + personally have customized several complicate setting for explicit B/W because PS couldn’t duplicate or will contribute to something unnatural + for me isn’t worth working 6 hours on a shot just to make it effective. I hope in some way this perspective will offer some helpful ideas :) Last yellow filter is extremely helpful but in some cases picture modes and spot meter (if available) could cause problems of under over exposure between dark subjects
Now CRITIC for the image :( I think the lighting effect would have greater impact if wasn’t distributed equal, also I will had choose a slight angle to avoid that visual flatness! That’s my opinion!
