About Last full Moon I got up early to watch it set over the hills at the lake. I did not get the picture I was hoping for as the clouds rolled in on me. However, going through my shots, I realized this one was rather pretty. At least, I thought so and I hope you do, too.
I am adding to my about: This is pretty much right from my camera. I did use the unsharpen tool on the water reflection, but it really made little difference. I cropped a little and framed it. The colours are not altered or curved. The Moon in the original picture was quite bright. To make it look more like the scene I was viewing I enhanced the Moon's details with the help of a picture I took a minute later. In reality, looking at the Moon that morning, the Moon's details were a lot more defined than seen here.

Hi Hakan. Yes, the moon does look very yellow here, but it is the true colour as I saw it. If you watch the Moon as it is just rising or setting, you will notice that it differs from the usual white colour we see when it is high in the sky. It is actually very beautiful to watch, especially in a very dark spot as I was fortunate enough to be at for this shot. The colour change effect is caused by the Earth's atmosphere. When the Moon is closer to the horizon, we are looking at through much more of Earth's atmosphere than when it is directly overhead. By the time the moonlight reaches our eyes, the air molecules have scattered the blue, green, and purple light leaving us with the yellow, or red, or orange colour to enjoy.

Hi Art. How kind of you to come back to this picture. Your comment made me smile. I really like this one, also. Interestingly, this was the picture I got while trying to get the picture I wanted. The planned for one was a disappointment and then this one caught my attention as expressing the beauty of the scene I was watching. In this case, I didn't get what I wanted, I got something better. Thanks for the revisit.

I actually enjoy how some of the photo is more focused than other portions. I'm a big fan of sky, cloud, and nature shots anyway, and I tried to get a moon photo a while ago with some pretty cloud cover. Mine didn't turn out at all, so I can appreciate this one more! You and I are drawn to similar scenes, so it's always fun to see what you come up with!

The detail on the reflection on the water is extra interesting. The outline adds a lovely element!

Neil Dolman   {K:26883} 8/4/2005
Hi Mary, no problem! Basically there are several ways to do this (and no/yes you are not really on the right track by looking in your control monitor settings!) The idea is that you set up your monitor so it accurately reproduces the colour and brightness etc that will be seen/accepted by most monitors at home, or will agree with your printer settings.
As i said there are several ways/programs that will help you do this. If you use photoshop, one program that is delivered with Photoshop is Adobe Gamma. You will find this on your computer somewhere (if you need help just ask). This when correctly set up "lets you calibrate the contrast and brightness, gamma (midtones), color balance, and white point of monitors. This helps you eliminate any color cast in your monitor display, make your monitor greys as neutral as possible, and standardize your display of images on different monitors (whatever the combinations of monitor and video card). The utility then saves these settings as an ICC profile for your monitor" (btw: i copied this from an internet site, makes it easier to explain).

Before i did this myself i would have photos that looked wonderful at home but when i posted them they were always to dark. OK, i can check them at work (television) so it's easy for me. But now i have a pretty good idea just how far i can go and i see everything/lots of things that others don't. Like your rock for example, or where someone has used the USM on a particluar part of the image and thinks no one will notice :)
It is not easy to get a good calibration, but worth the effort... after all you spend a lot of time trying to get a good composition/photograph and it would be a shame when it doesn't come across quite as you would have liked it.
If i can help in any way just let me know, otherwise take a look in google and you'll find lots of information.

Best wishes Neil

Neil, thanks so much for your comment. You mentioned you would have used a layer mask not the lasso. Someday, I'll learn how to do that.
Re my monitor calibration: Can you tell me what the settings should be for a better view? I'm assuming this is through the Control Panel--Dislpay--Monitor--etc. Or, am I not on the right track here? Thanks.

Hi Mary, i've been reading this thread with interest, and the reason it has been chosen as "critique of the day". First of all let me say that it is a nice photo :) Secondly, what a few people have picked up on is correct, the lines around the ray of light and of course the rock to the bottom left is easily visible. Everyone has given you suggestions about feathering so i wont go into that, suffice to say that there are many ways to do this... and i wouldn't have lassoo'd anything to improve the levels here, but would have used a layer mask.

BUT, and this is the point i want to give you on your way is...

All these suggestions don't mean a thing if you can't see the result on your monitor at home. You really need to calibrate your monitor so that you can be sure that what you upload is going to be seen correctly on "most" of the viewers monitors. This is the first step i would make before looking into any finer points of PS.
Anyway, once again. Enjoy your photography and take care.

Best wishes from Switzerland
Neil

Pierre, thank you so much. I am very pleased that you like it. It was a beautiful sight and it is hard to capture the moment on a camera. However, I was pleased with how this turned out. I couldn't see the line on my monitor. I didn't know how to feather before. Now, a couple of people have explained.
Thanks again.

Hi Mary,

Very, very BEAUTIFUL shot!!!

As was commented by others already, the lasso selection would be the only thing that needs to be fixed by feathering out the edges.

Otherwise....... WOW!!!!!!! The clouds add a nice sense of drama to the scene!

Toni, thanks so much for your comment. That is very kind of you. This Moon is taken with my camera. I took it just after the original shot to get a bit of detail for this picture as in it, the Moon was pretty much just a bright spot and what I saw was detail and wanted my picture to reflect that. It was that same early morning that I took some new ones through my telescope. I took them before the clouds came along. I think next time, I'll try some with some clouds. It might prove interesting.

I'm not sure what software you're using, Mary, but 'feathering' a selection helps soften the edge between the part you've adjusted and the part you haven't. If you're using Photoshop, (having made your selection), you simply go to the 'select' menu and choose 'feather'. Then you type in the number of pixels you want to 'feather' the selection by. On a high res (6mp) image, if you wanted to darken the sky but not leave a conscious line along the join with the land or sea, you'd put in a value of, say, 100 pixels. Other times you'll use a very small 'feather' of just one or two pixels.
I hope this helps a bit.
Best regards, Chris

Alastair Bell   {K:29571} 7/19/2005
Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique Hi Mary,

This is a beautiful image. I love the colours and the reflections over the water.

On a technical note I too can see the line around the selection area (I'm nearly certain thats what it is) that Chris mentioned.

What Chris is referring to is feathering the selection area. Assuming you are using Photoshop, make you selections, then go to the menu, choose Select -> Feather and input a number of pixels to feather the edge by. Now do whatever you need to do to make your adjustments. This will remove or reduce any sharp lines around an area that has been adjusted and provide a smoother transition.
Another wothwhile tool is a noise reduction tool. This will help reduce the digital noise effects that so often appear on night shots due to the inherent digital noise present in a camera. There are several free ones on the web you can try or if you want to email me I can point you at the one I find best (email address is on my profile). On this image you can just see a little noise in the clouds directly below the moon.

On an aesthetic note, I think this is a stunning image!

Del, thanks for your comment. I was lucky capturing so much light that morning. I do think the reflective nature of the water and the clouds must be what did it. At home, I can't get this. I did enhance the Moon's details to have them better reflect the wonderfully clear details I actually saw.

milan  milan    {K:254} 7/16/2005
Thanks Mary, for taking time to reply twice.
About those lines - that's more like a steep difference between the shining area and the darker outside, instead of a gradual one - should have come because of sharpening i guess. And yes i can also see the rock on the left near bottom.

Yeah thats pretty neat when you can see moonset and sunrise one after another - though havent really seen it, but this picture of yours has really motivated to go watch for it!

Mary Brown   {K:71879} 7/16/2005
Vini, thanks for your comment. I'm pleased you like my picture. On my monitor, I can't see what you are mentioning in the lower left corner. However, there was a large rock there that I thought I had cropped completely out. So, that would be what you see there. Goodness knows, there was no one else who set an alarm to get up at that hour to watch the Moon set. But, I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was very beautiful.

Mary Brown   {K:71879} 7/16/2005
Thanks, Mark. You are so right. I had a certain picture in my head that I was aiming for. When it was clouded out, I guess I didn't think to take a good look at what I actually did have. I was very happy when I saw this one. Now I don't feel so badly about not getting the one I had in my head, especially now that I know I may have been trying for something that wasn't going to work even if the clouds had cooperated.

Mary Brown   {K:71879} 7/16/2005
Hi Chris. Thanks for your comment. You know, on my monitor, I can't see what you mean re the lines. But then, I also don't see the bit of rock that Vini mentioned in the lower left corner that I apparently left in after cropping. I did lasso the reflection to sharpen that part (it didn't make really any difference). Could that be what you are seeing the lines from? I can't think what else it could be as Mother Nature surely didn't need any help with composition or colour here.
Could you help me out a little further--I don't know what you mean by 'feathering the selection before adjusting the levels'. How do I do that?
Thanks, Mary

  0

Mary Brown   {K:71879} 7/16/2005
Hi Art. Thanks for your comment. Actually, I am a little confused by it. Are you thinking it is a PS made picture? Is that what you meant? Actually, this is pretty much right from my camera. There were no adjustments made to the colours or compositon---just some cropping, framing and enhancing of the Moon's details.
Mary

Mary Brown   {K:71879} 7/16/2005
Milan, it's me again. There are times you can have the enjoyment of both sunrise and moonset. When the moon is full, it rises when the Sun sets and sets when the Sun rises. A little later after this picture was taken, I could look west to watch the Moon disappearing and east to watch the Sun rising. Neat, really.

Hi Bob, thanks for your comment. I am really glad you like my picture. It was a beautiful sight. The colours are the original. Regarding the Moon: In the original, the Moon was quite bright with undefined details. What I saw while enjoying this scene were very clear details on the face of the Moon. So, to make this more like the real scene, I defined the Moon's details somewhat; not as crisp as I was another picture of mine that same morning.

I am amazed you got so much light from the light of the moon with out a time exposure. I especially like the detail of the moon itself. I think this is more pleasing than most sunset photos. Very well done. Del.

Mary Brown   {K:71879} 7/15/2005
Milan, thanks for the comment. Regarding the shining area around the reflection--the reflection is over the water so that shines. However, I realize now that on some monitors, there is a line on each side of the reflection--I don't see it on mine here. All I can figure is it is somehow showing the lasso line that I used around the reflection to sharpen it a little.

P.S. It looks like you may have darkened the centre section a bit, as there appears to be a noticeable line at either edge of the darker bit. If that's the result of making a selection, then dropping the levels, the line can be avoided by feathering the selection before adjusting the levels. Just a thought.

Yes Mary, it IS rather pretty is an understatement. The cloud arrangement perfect and the reflections on the water lead you right into the clouds. The softness give a very mellow feeling. Best Regards,
Bob

Really nice. I like it too Mary!

I am not really an early riser, but do get up once in a while to watch the sunrise - and i would say it is always worth it. Now, Moonset - never really gave much importance to that, but i think i should :)

Whats that shining area around the reflection?
