About	Il Salone dei Giochi era la sala d’onore dell’Appartamento dello Specchio, Mentre Alfonso II, succeduto al padre Ercole II nel 1559, stava portando a compimento la metamorfosi del Castello, che da fortezza andava assumendo l’aspetto di residenza ducale, un terribile terremoto (1570) lo obbligò a compiere nuovi lavori di restauro e di ricostruzione: tra questi, la sostituzione della struttura in muratura, posta a sostegno dei solai delle tre sale di rappresentanza, con una lignea, più leggera ed elastica. La decorazione è databile dopo il 1570, poiché sulla superficie pittorica non sono stati rinvenuti danni. Gli artisti ai quali appare ormai certo che possa essere assegnata l’intera esecuzione del soffitto sono Sebastiano Filippi detto il Bastianino (Ferrara 1532 ca.-1606), Ludovico Settevecchi (Modena 1520-Ferrara 1590) e Leonardo da Brescia (attivo dal 1556 e morto nel 1598), ad eccezione del riquadro con Il Lancio del Disco, di più difficile lettura perché rimaneggiato in epoca successiva, ascrivibile a una personalità minore.
