About No photoshopping involved, heh... This was an infrared photo of my girlfriend standing in front of a garden gate at Santa Clara University... I used a darkroom technique I figured out to get the blurred streaks and then I toned it blue...

Thank you very for the comments, this took quite a while to get the way I wanted it. Nathan, I'd be glad to share my technique. I came up with it on my own, but I think it's similar to "unsharp masking" and I unfortunately don't think I'm the first to try it... I printed this for _about_ 12 seconds and during the last 2 seconds I slowly and smoothly raised the enlarger up, which slowly enlarged the printing area and took it out of focus which results in soft blurs radiating from the darker areas of the image. I hope this helps, and thank you again. :B

Adding on Joe McCary's comment, this also supports the notion that using photo editting is not "cheating". It's just another tool of expression, laborious to learn to use the digital darkroom well, just as "real" darkroom techniques are.

As far as this image is considered, this is really nicely done! Great job, Mr Gies. I enjoyed your entire portfolio.

Found this one in the random images. Stunning. I enjoy both the toning and especially the streaks. As someone who is terribly new to darkroom would you mind sharing the technique? Or is that an artist secret.

This is a striking photo and a good job. But more than that; it serves to point out how photography can and has been manipulated without the use of Photoshop. This image serves as a good reminder that while a computer and Photoshop "can" alter the look of images, so too can a creative person with a darkroom! Good job.

I like the whole effect of this very much. Good job!
