The light on the railings and the splash of pink pull this image out of the ordinary. Could perhaps be a touch sharper, but I like it.

You are very welcome, Avi! It is exactly what you should continue doing as you already have more than the necessary skill that makes it possible to translate "the moment, the emotion, the feeling" to real images. I think that the future brings many things for you in matters of photography.
Thanks a lot for the URLs! I just took a quick look and tonight I'll be having a detailed look. Indeed very very strong, from what I saw now. Such guys are indeed unique!
The only good URL I could find about Dinos was: http://www.dinosdiamantopoulos.com/index.html . It is hard to find more because he denied almost any publicity just like Vangelis also does. For such guys that simply go their ways and don't care at all for that "VIP" celebrations it is always hard to find something, I guess.
Cheers!
Nick

Thanks Nick. Thanks for reminding me something very important, which I was forgetting. That when we do something with real passion, the wish to excel becomes secondary. Even if maybe we had started with it. Yes, THAT is my photography.. you are very very right in your assessment. To me all that matters is the moment, the emotion, the feeling. That is all that goes inside my mind and which tells me when to click that shutter and when not to !
About Nachtwey, maybe you have already seen it then, but I was referring to his TED award winning speech (here's the youtube link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGKZhNK_pHw) and the movie made on him by Christian Frei (here's the imdb link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0309061/) The whole approach and the principles of James' life and work has indeed moved me very very deeply.
On Dinos, no I am not familiar with him and his works, but would like to, very very much. So please send me all references that you can.
Cheers! Avi

Hi Avi!
-- "the light indeed was very very tricky"
Yes, this is immediately recognizable. And you mastered it by - I dare say - allowing it to be as it is, Avi. For me, to artificially make light "obey" is more or less to rape it. That's only cheap. But you consequently choose to work hand in hand with it. Which is, in my eyes, why we call it *photo*graphy.
-- About Capa
First thing that jumps into my mind is, I start understanding (perhaps) a bit more about your photographic attitudes when you say how much you admire Capa. And it sounds natural to me that Nachtwey moved something in you, since he is for me one of the persons that "expanded" that school but in a very tight, consequent, consistent way.
Now, when I see some of your images, especially in my less busy times, I can really admit that the same kind of spark lights up. Not that it is like losing your own signature and just transforming to yet another copy of that, not at all. But the essence of your images starts looking more and more like that school to me.
Of course I am more than interested in that kind of photography. I really really wished I could be half able to come close to that. You remember when we talked about "the story and nothing but the story" some time ago? Well for me it is actually the same chapter, if you like, since I have the impression that guys like Capa didn't have the intention (and much less the arrogance) to stand like teachers of morals in front of us and tell us "what it all means" and the like nonsense, which many too many wannabes seem to be eager to do. As if it was some kind of revelation here.
So, I'd say, perhaps you take the time to find your photography not as "futile" as you perhaps tend to do now. You know, I might be wrong here, but I don't have the impression that for example Nachtwey had any intention to "excel" in any way. He just did that seriously and sincerely, or am I completely mistaken? Perhaps after all the absence of any wish to "excel" is the best starting point for all that? That would be very... India, wouldn't it?
And yes, please send me the link! I'd be glad to see some of that work.
BTW, did you ever hear of Dinos Diamanandopoulos? The guy died from a heart attack some days ago. Another one of those stunning "clicks" of a shutter that we will unfortunately hear nevermore. Some of his portraits, especially one of Vangelis... that's simply not from this world.
Cheers!
Nick

thanks .. the light indeed was very very tricky.. and especially so as I always shoot handheld.. but I guess you said the perfect thing here: 'the definition of the subject itself is strong enough and so no more details are necessary'
by the way, wanted to ask you, how interested are you in war photography ? I have always been a VERY BIG admirer of Robert Capa. Recently I saw James Nachtwey's work which has moved me so deeply that all my own endeavours in photography has suddenly started to seem very futile.
let me know, then I'll send you an email with the link.

Little? Well, I see here a rather big wonder and that's how an image with not really the typical highest degree of sharpness for details can still generate such a "detailed impression". It must be that the definition of the subject itself is strong enough and so no more details are necessary.
The light difference between the "other things" and the girl is about phenomenal for my eyes. The girls looks like under sunshine while the night is already very very deep in the blues. The city seems to be very far away, but I guess not only in the optical sense but also because of the atmosphere of the image. Somehow one can hear the thoughts of the young lady that stands and watches the world as it evolves into the night.
Good work again, and this time also quite a kind of its own.
Cheers!
Nick

lovely low-key approach, the hint of pink against the blues is really great; compo as always is impressive; this is a picture that tells a story, for that reason is good; some technical issues could be better: I'd try to correct the barrel distorsion and details are poor, perhaps this is a picture you can not enlarge a lot take care doc
