Hi Dhimant,

Thanks for your comments. To answer your question, it is not that difficult:

1. Create a panoramic image (preferably 360 degrees, seamless, but any other panoramic image might work, too, as long as both ends show a minimal transition when put next to eachother.

2. Scale the image to a square. I used a 12.000 pixels wide image, so I ended up with a huge file of 12.000 x 12.000 pixels. In photoshop, I use "File>Image Size", and deselect the constrain proportions.

3. Rotate the image 180 degrees, or flip the image vertically.

4. Still in photoshop: Go to "Filter>Distort>Polarize". And click ok.

5. Fine tune the corners, as they will show some beams towards the center. I usually create a circular mask, set the feather to about 25% of the image aspects, invert the selection, and fill it with a dark colour.

Thats it :)

Well Douglas (Dougy? Doug?), the image I've recently uploaded is certainly NOT what I had in mind. But I ran a quick check through the back catalogue to see if I had anything that could undergo the Hugo Planet treatment, and by chance I stumbled on this guy having a kip at the station. As to my own little planet, well, I guess I will find it eventually...

Thanks for the original stitch, Hugo. I would have preferred something a little larger... It is good to be back in touch. Have you tried the latest PTgui (up to v8.2 now)? It makes use of multiple processors, and is very much faster at most tasks than earlier version, and has some interesting new features like automatic HDR processing...

This entire series rocks.

Cool concept. Stunning result.

Hi Roger,

Nice to hear from you! Stitching images isn't that much work, there are plenty of stand alone programs out there, which produce flawless results - I've achieved completely seamless results with PTGui and AutoPano Pro. They're painstakingly slow, though...

Per attatched the original stitch.

Very fine application of a planetary transformation to a panorama. I have enough trouble stitching four or six images and don't envy you the task of stitching 34 of them! Can we also see the original panorama? (I realize it may be up elsewhere and I just haven't noticed it...)

Hey, Mate, this is such a cool look! :)

I agree with Douglas....that it's set a little too high in the frame. Other than that...it's a great result for your efforts! :)

Aloha AJ,

You are the coolest and I greatly respect your comments on my images, but on Mr. Hugo's piece here I am sure that He and I both would greatly appreciate what you wanted to share with your concept.

Whether late or not please let Hugo and I know when you will exhibit your own interpretation 'After-the-Fact' or otherwise ... Right Hugo?

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 9/28/2008
Hi AJ,

Me too, I saw the concept a few days ago, and thought to have a go with it. It's quite elaborate to create a seamless stitch with polar coordinates. I agree the balance is a bit off in this one, and creating a sphere with the correct proportions of the buildings puts some limitations on the type of images suitable for this kind of manipulation.

I like the idea of animating this. Should be feasible, too...:) Now there's a creative idea!

Cheers,

Hugo

I came across this concept a few weeks ago, and not having seen it on UF was going to give it a shot. Oh well, you got there first...

Your interpretation is quite surreal, largely because "your" planet has a far greater proportion of water on it than "ours" does. I find my eyes concentrating on the part that is upright - maybe we need to see this gently revolving in order to appreciate it fully!

Dear Douglas,

Sorry about the belitteling "Dougy". Rather childish of me.

Yeah. Those "Ray Extensions" are neat. A pity, though. I'd rather not have to watermark my images, but as I've recently discovered some of my images being used by others without permission, I'm afraid it has become necessary.

Framing: Good point, and well taken, thanks.
Outlet for water? Because you can't see it, it doesn't mean it isn't there. The harbor entrance is in the lower part of the image, with the two piers overlapping. There's your way out:) I do see what you mean, though, and I do agree it would've been nice(r). Don't worry about the inhabitants of the village, though. They're bound to vacate the village, because there are -strangely- no chickens left to eat.

Apart from that, you are the first to call me Narcissistic, and it explains a lot why that irks you / why I irk you. Maybe it is because I thoroughly enjoy photography and image manipulation - once only a hobby, now also a profession? I can't really connect to the relevance of Engineering and Scientific knowledge, though. What does that have to do with anything related to this image?

By the way, It's great you have such a history with special effects in the field long before Photoshop was ever created, congratulations :)

I had hopes the story of the small town in Iceland would have been covered up, or at least fade into oblivion by the sheer magnificence of what an Hawaiian bloke manages with film. Apparently not, but all I'm advised to say about this is: "no comment".

Cheers,

Hugo-y

You see ... even 'Dictation' is spelled wrong! Had to let her go. You understand ... right?

神 風 神 風   {K:10665} 9/28/2008
P.S. Sorry about my mathematics concerning the the 'Tie Breaker', but I was employing a 'Solar Powered' calculator and it is a bit overcast today ... ! :))

Furthermore, I have fired my Secretary today for several typo errors because she just does not listen to my dication ...

Hugoy ... Now for a serious critique ... Okay?

Pros:

1. An idea with great imagination from an 'Engineering' mind courtesy of 'Computer Scientists'.

2. What I like best is the 'Ray Extensions' of the 'Typographical Credits'.

3. As for the 'Title' ... perfectly appropriate.

Cons ... and there are always some ... Right? :

1. This highly creative piece is set too high in the frame especially if you were to Mat & Frame thus loosing the top border somewhat unless you leftat least a 7% 'Safety Margin' to accommodate for the current error as displayed.

2. I see no 'Outlet' for the water within this beautiful little colourful town unless it is underground therefore the H2O would stagnate without proper circulation and replenishment. Would this not cause possible Hygiene issues for all inhabitants ... Yes/No?

Let's stop here since we are two for two on the image itself ... Okay?

Now let's venture deeper into the mind(s) of the two Photographers communicating:

1. Why belittle me with the spelling of my name as 'Dougy' from the onset?

2. Because of your 'Narcissistic' attitude you must have a hard time of 'Getting Your Hat Back On' at times and I think so for the longest time now!

3. You know very well that I have applied 'Special Effects In The Field' long before 'Photoshop' was ever created ... Right? So, ... this must be the 'Tie Breaker' bewteen you and I! :))

Remember also that 'Naturalists' will 'Rule' in the end because the 'Garden of Eden' will be restored! What will you do with all your Engineering & Scientific Knowledge that has destroyed our 'World' environmentally and otherwise?

Best of Regards,

P.S. Is it true and will you confirm whether the story is true that very recently a person by the name of Hugo the 'Wolf' ravaged a small town in Iceland engulping chickens from a little farm without even 'Plucking' them first ... ? :))

Great advice, I'll try that sometime!

Oh No Hugoy ... I would have just taken a small 'Cosmopolitan Ring Shot' and utilized the little mountain as the earthly 'Gemstone'!

I wouldn't want to get in trouble with the 'Gods of Photography' especially because I may be on the 'Board of Directors' ... :))

Hey Dougy!

You've got it spot on. No fooling you. Lots and lots of plugins, filters, and all that the gods of photography have forbidden. Tell me: what would you have done? Used one of your 5mm fisheye lenses and levitated for a while to get the shot? Any advice is welcome :)

Cheers,

You pal, Hugo.
