Hi Amber! Many thanks for your kind comment.

Your request is huge and difficult to respond to as it depends on so many different things, including the subjects that interest you and the objective of your photography. One suggestion would be that you post individual images on UF, giving as much technical and background info as you can. Make it clear that you would like others to tell you how they think you could improve each specific image.

Honest critique is exactly what I want, Harry so thank you for this observation. However, this is more or less straight out of the camera - usual RAW adjustments and some cropping, but no layers! I see what you mean about the front dice. This actually results from the fact that I wanted to ensure that the closest dice was sharply in focus and so it was stationary, rather than rolled with the others.

Playing with fire AJ ;-) Excellent result, nitbit, the most front dice does not really fit in some how, I think you used layers here, Just honest critique ! :)

Many thanks, Ray. The technique sort of imposed itself on me as I played around with the setup and developed the idea.

Not really "one up", Pat, just different. And yes, it was done with rear/second curtain flash sync.

I like being one upped in this way... Well done... Second Curtain flash?

A very well set out composition AJ with a stunning visual effect. This is not a photographic arena that I have dabbled in and I am in awe of the result you have achieved. A wonderful presentation on this superb diagonalised shot. Very best wishes to you.....Ray

Thanks Hugo. I used a third party flash because that's what I had to hand - I'd bought it previously because it is easy to force a third party flash to sync at high-speed with the D70s. But using it as a strobe is an interesting idea!

Nice use of a fill flash with slow shutter! What flash did you use? With a SB800, you can also set it to stroboscope; which provides several flash bursts, freezing the rolling movement of the dice, too. Good choice of using the rear curtain, though. Great effect, and well exposed.

Cheers,

hugo

Thanks Keith. I ended up using the on-board flash rather than an off-camera unit as I originally intended. But the "curls" of the curly cable to the off-camera flash proved too strong and kept pulling the unit over. What a stupid design! Any clues as to how to uncurl a curly cable (try saying that fast!) gratefully received...

Thanks Riny. I'm not quite sure what you are referring to, but Pat's shots that inspired this generated a little heated exchange.

I prefer to keep my thoughts to myself on this one, though I'd certainly be interested to hear what it stirs in others' minds.

It's fun. I think it's very important to stay open for new things, people don't like a lot of things that are new. Maybe you'll have to explain your thoughts by this picture....;) be well AJ,riny

Many thanks, Marian! Actually, there's nothing too special about the technique - just a long enough shutter and a flash at the end!

Thanks Julie. There's no secret here - just douse them in petrol and set them alight!

(Alternatively, you could illuminate them as they roll and use rear sync flash...)
