This is fog and winter as strong as it can get, and a more than deserved award, Ben. I am astound by the quality of the image! When one also considers how hard it can get to capture the look and feel of such a fog, then it is completely clear what an exact work you did here. The exposure balance worked perfectly for allowing the fog to speak in its own way. BTW, did you make any exposure corrections after light metering?
The transition to more and more "milky and fuzzy" details as we proceed into the depth allows they eyes to perceive the distance. It makes the three dimensionality absolutely tangible. Those trees at the depth, just on the border to invisibility are great for defining the horizon.
The image has also something very "high-keyish" and so the splash of deep green on the lake brings a nice tension to the otherwise uniform and strict color palette. Speaking about that stripe of plants, they deviate so well from the rule of thirds together with the mill. So we have a good example about how to manage to make a good composition outside this rule.
One of the best landscapes I saw.
