About
There was a very thick fog bank a mile offshore. A local ship captain had just been taken out to board the ship by a pilot boat. A local bar pilot/captain is required to bring a ship into our difficult to navigate port. As I was about to leave my perch near the coast guard tower, a local pilot boat head out into the fog. I knew what was about to happen, so I set up my tripod and hoped for the best. It was beginning to get dark as the pilot boat headed back in to port. The light was going fast and I was lucky to catch the pilot boat in clear air, and the ship slowly coming out of the fog as it headed in towards the bay. I recall shooting about 1/4 second with my 300 lens and 1.4 converter.
Thank you stingRay. There was no fog onshore. This thick fog bank ran along the coast about a mile offshore. So thick, that 30 seconds earlier this 600 foot long ship was invisible. Also rare, the ocean was as flat as could be. It made for a great combination. I promised the true color version of this image in 2009.......... I'm slowing down a little bit. Also, from rereading my previous information this would have been shot at either 1/15 or possibly 1/8 second. I have two images, and the second one has more blurring in the pilot boat's lights. The reason for posting my newer version, is my acquisition of a Canoscan 9950F scanner. It allows me to make far nicer scans of my slides than the photo store that I used for all of my previous work here. Thanks again for commenting.
