Beautiful shot, John! I like the placement of his neck (the diagonal works well) and the limited dof on this one.
Leslie's suggestion is a good one, but I would take it a step further and mask the bird and adjust the color on him only. There's no reason to sacrifice the background, since the shadows on his body are the only problem. The magic wand should do nicely. ;)
And again, thanks for your comments on Rebellion - :) I enjoyed them.
John this works better with your background than the full shot did, however, you have a very blue cast to it, you need to adjust the color balance more to the yellow side and this will be a dandy..probably only adjust the egret or your background will be quite yellow as well...by zooming in you have eliminated the uncomfortable contrast between the shadows and the sunnier area
