About I was working on two small islands, doing a census on breeding seabirds and shorebirds. I loved the shadows of the Crested Terns (Sterna bergii) on the sand. I wonder if the picture would have worked better if I only took a photo of the shadows and no birds? Your opinion?

Hi Alice, wanted to get a comment in on this lovely Photo yo have here, you asked would just the shadows be better? noooo :) youd lose all the action and i think what makes this pic, actually is the colors, the birds and that nice blue behind them, a very nice shot, Congrats.

This is a brilliant photo!! I found this to be rather unique considering how the top half of the photo is really busy while the bottom half is a lot more simple and plain. This gives it balance - and the composition is excellent. What makes this picture particularly striking is how all the birds flock together with the wings flapping. I particularly like how the wings look blurry BUT...the birds are a lil blurry too. Perhaps try next time, try to make the birds look sharper but make the wings look blurry - if you are willing to try that challenge! winks The shadows on the sand gives the photo a really nice ending. I cannot find much faults except the fact that, the lighting could be a tiny little lighter...it does look a little dark...! Congrats for creating such a beautiful photo!

Lots of Cheers, The StRaWbErRy TeMpTrEsS

As I am a great fan of Sea Birds,I like the Photo as it is. I also feel that your shadow only photo makes an interesting shot. In fact, with come further cropping and a bit of cloning, perhaps you could come up with a third presentation of the birds on the ground with the shadows of flying birds. Kind of a "Dreaming of Flying" theme...Regards.

Alice,

I like this as is - I like the interplay between the actual birds and their shadows - it is like a dance or a dialogue. However, I would shoot a bunch with just the shadows too - the right shot could be spectacular. Finally, maybe try some with all shadows and one real bird.

Just thoughts. This is the kind of thing I would shoot a whole roll on. ;)

Alice lucky you to get that capture, the shadows and birds are caught excellently by you.

It depends what you want - if abstract pattern, then there is another great nature patternshot too (only birds, top right)... and if you want "correct" nature photo :), then leave as it is.

Here is an alternative view of the same picture (see my original comments above). It is much more simple, but still beautiful.
