Athos, I think this is an excellent photo. I love the ballet dancer on the wall that seems to be flying through the scene.

hi.. about the handi miss that..but thats not your fault.. i think that the composition doesnt really work here. that litter is very wrong there, and distract my eyes, because the lady has such a nice pose...free. and makes my eyes follow her shape, and then that litter comes and frustrates me. the things are too close to her i think.. that figure needs far more space, to the eye to follow, travel on that... anyway, i like the idea and the tones, it could be a very nice picture.. just too close, i would love to see it minimal.. and (as for me) i dont need the car as well there.. but the litter and that tree are distracting.. all the best to you... oh, i replied to your question anyway.. cheers: Balazs

A nice composition, a photo with a very strong message. A litte note only on the position of the ballerina , maybe a little more "in the photo" and not so high in the frame.

Very often art is hidden amongst so much trash.
This image has an interesting duality. The environment is most of the story here. The wall has a hole and a water stain. The garbage can is full and overflowing on the ground. The pole behind here has graffiti on it. All are signs of urban decay and neglect.
Yet amongst this, is a ballerina. She jumps past adding some life and perhaps even some humor. She adds interest in the image because of the absurdity of the situation. But this very absurdity is what makes this image strong.
The urban decay results from human neglect. The neglect is not only social, but also intellectual. Man?s ambivalence toward his environment has lead it to this point in the same way that the short attention span of today?s society has lead to the decay of intellectual ideas. True creative art has trouble existing in such an environment.
Yet, the ballerina springs forth. She is challenging the decay and performing despite the environment. Although her environment is unusual, this is all she has and she is determined to perform. Her face exhibits the joy of breaking free from normality and she enjoys the freedom that it brings.
A few technical notes. The toning of the image really does not add anything to the image itself. It is so strong that it is almost becoming distracting. The negative appears to have been scanned in upside down, as the graffiti and the license plate seem backwards. Finally regarding the cropping. While I agree that perhaps cropping to the tree will help, I would oppose any cropping done to the trash can. The competing items in this image add to your message and the symbolism of the trashcan is too strong to reduce.

Rarely have I seen an individual interact with an urban environment so beautifully!!! This is good strong work, I think it will do very well in the competition.
I've been leafing through your portfolio, there's wonderful work here.

You know I love it. It is such a strong strong image. The almost merging of her into the garbage...so strange and beautiful at the same time.

Even without her hand it's a strong photo Athos. If you're putting it in a contest, I would consider cropping away the tree and even part of the trash basket -- then it would be tighter on the ballerina and still reveal plenty of evidence of her environment.
