Funny, now that I'm looking at the full-frame version (see comment above), I think I like it better. Serves me right for being so quick to crop in PS. ;)

Know what you mean about the black bar; it's part of an iron railing, and you can see more of it in the uncropped version of the photo (attached here). I actually renamed the image from "2 flowers" to "urban flowers" (this was shot in the inner city) hoping to play a little off of the iron bar, but I don't think it flies.

Excellent capture of beauty, spirit and colour! The smile is so natural, and she looks at home amdist the flowers and plants. To me, the black bar also doens't seem to fit with the natural flow of this image. It's not distracting, as it blends in nicely, but it just doesn't seem to go. Really, though, I'm too busy staring at the face that's looking at the camera!

Dan.. thanks for the comments.. Yeah i get noise sometimes at 1600. I think it depends on the lighting, not sure. But i have used 1600 a lot and have had a pretty good success rate. Of course, I rather not use it if I can help it... hmm still love this photo!!

Nicole,
Thanks very much. As for getting it sharp, the answer is easy: I cheat. ;) This is an image from a digital SLR, the Canon 10D.
I do have plenty of film-based photographs, however, and a Polaroid SS 4000 scanner. I'll upload one of those as my next submission. And no, they don't appear quite as sharp as the 10D images, mainly because of the grain in film and the way that it scans. Still, I can't bear to part with my Leica, so film and scanning remains part of this process for me for the timebeing (though I must say the 10D has put a serious dent into how much film I shoot nowadays).
I wrote a brief article on this subject just before making the move to direct digital capture; if you're interested, you can read it here (contains a few more images):

Thanks so much to everyone for the encouraging words. I've already learned a great deal by browsing each of your portfolios. Wish I had time to comment on all that I've seen (my eyes are selfish! they won't always wait for my slow-typing fingers before moving on), but there is no hurry, really. It's nice getting to know you through your perspectives of the world.
I feel we share this bond: a vulnerability to beauty.
The photograph grants us the luxury of lingering for awhile over that which otherwise transpires so quickly. The camera is generous: it sees openly, judging nothing. I aspire toward that.
All the best, Dan

Welcome to usefilm Dan. A nice entry indeed. After going back to see if you had any other uploads, I realized you live in my neighborhood. I live in St. Mary's County, Maryland, about 1 1/2 hours south of Baltimore. Glad to see you here. Will be awaiting for new uploads.

This stands out as an engaging child's portrait. Nice one. As with Paul, I hire the lens occasionally (impressed) but haven't been able to justify the cost, yet...
