Caught without a wide angle prime lens and my speedlight I wanted to try some panning practice on kids skating on the south bank of the thames. To hold detail on the back lit subject I had to risk overexposing the frame and a short depth of focus. The overal effect isn't too bad considering, I actually quite like the 'outer glow' around the subject and the very neutral washed out background. The depth of focus was not very forgiving but this shot got his head and the board in focus. Pity his hand got cropped (doh!). Why the decisive moment? Because at this point hes' basically a passenger and just has to land (he didn't!).
Great shot, I am pleased that you put the information that he bailed in the description because I always wonder. I agree with you that the blown out highlights around him work. I also don't mind a bit of soft focus around the edges because it conveys motion in a subtle fashion. Great work.
