About I got the idea for the cropping from another photo I saw on this site. I decided to adapt it to a photo of three zebras that I have. I did just a bit of burn work over the backs but other than that it's untouched.

I liked the title very much, it is as creative as your composition is. Ofcourse needs to be sharp.

Interesting shot, people who understand some of the physics of depth of field would suspect something suspicious going on here. I like it however, it's quite creative and doesn't have to much hocus-pocus and digital trickery over emphisied.

Very nice shot, very abstract! Love the lines...
Zebra's are always a good subject for such captures, great!

james,
the idea is excellent, but the picture lacks sharpness as already mentioned.

thank you very much for your very personal and elaborate comment on 'there was a place in la mancha..'. some such memories tend to stay and then they are revoked by a sound of music, a scent in the air or ... a picture!
best regards

This shows really good sense of what makes a great photograph. But the bad news is that sharpening is QUITE DIFFICULT to do well. There are a couple of basic settings like "light sharpening" and "strong sharpening" and then you have to get into using the UNSHARP MASK. Frankly, it took me a couple of months playing with the three or four basic settings for the UM before I could see what they were each doing and how they interacted. I later found some pretty good tutorials and wish I had come across them earlier. The basic and most important rule is to do the sharpening to the image at the size it will be displayed. If its for Usefilm, make a 640 x whatever image and play with THAT! Don't work on a bigger one and then reduce it. Just my two yen, as someone who has paid his dues for sharpening.

The composition is great. I love it.
The cropping makes it a very nice abstract.
Shame it isn't sharper. The object is interesting, I may try and make it sharper myself. It it comes out reasonably good, I'll get back to you
Excellent work, James

I wish I had more knowledge of PS to tell you how. I'm sure there are many on the site who could come up with creative ideas. That's why I like this site so much!

When I try to sharpen it using the tool bar (filters>sharpen) all I get is an increase awareness of the pixels and an artificial look to the whole thing. The mane on the zebra to the right becomes very pixelized and blurry. The white stripes don't look right...all in all it just looks weird when I sharpen it. I think I just had crappy DOF. Can you offer any ideas or suggestions on how to sharpen it without making it look artificial?

I think if it was a bit sharper, you could sell this as a poster!! Great composition.
