Finally got my film scanner! Wahoo! This was the last shot on my first (ever) roll of slide film. Alas, as nice as it is, the 640 pixel jpg image doesn't do it justice.
Thanks for the comments, Kim. And Sean, yeah, that's the spot. Fortunately the fog didn't roll in that day. Here's a little description of the feeling there that I wrote down when I got back home...
'Just watched what seemed like the last sunset... Had just finished my roll of film with the last shot, a bird sitting on a rock silhouetted against the setting sun. People that had been playing with their dogs on the beach stopped and gazed out to the west. A couple sitting close on a sandstone outcropping looked on. With the sun's inferno half extinguished in the sea, I ambled up the sandstone cliffs to the street above. There people lined the sidewalk staring out to sea in a hypnotic trance. Cars stopped in the middle of the road. Drivers behind them didn't honk or speed around them like you'd expect. They had stopped as well, their eyes drawn to the orange sliver lingering on the horizon. And then it was gone. Everyone gazed on a few moments longer as if they'd just witnessed the last sunset of their lives.'
The saturated colours, the framing, and the sharpness of the image all make this a winner. Lovely, with the bird on the left, and the waves crashing on the right!
It's tough to see on this shrunken version of the image, but there's also a bird sitting on the rock to the left. The scanner is a Minolta Dimage Scan Elite F-2900. Paid $264.50 including shipping for a NIB unit on ebay (seller 'circuitdepot' highly recommended). Searching the web, I found the same unit goes for $600-800 on other sites. The quality is great for a $250 scanner. I need to learn to use the settings better to get the best possible scan, but I've been very pleased so far.
Adam, what a nice shot. I like how you have the sun in the middle between the waves on the right and the rocks on the left. What kind of scanner did you use, as I'm looking into getting one myself. Jim
