Yamil, the snowy owl required more patience than most of my other photos. It took two days to find the nest, and then it took a day of slowly moving a blind closer and closer until we were near the nest. I also had a strange experience while working on the owl. I first saw an owl fly, and went looking for it. I saw a light colored thing about a mile away, but the heat refraction was so bad I couldn't make out what it was. As I got closer, I knew what I was seeing was hair, not feathers. My brain said BEAR, but I reasoned no bear would be out in the middle of wet tundra where there was little to eat. I was hoping maybe I'd found a fox den. As I got within 30 yards of it, a large light colored brown bear stood up, stretched, and then lay back down. All I'd been seeing was the very top of it's head behind a small hummock. I quickly reversed direction, and gave up hunting for the owl that day.

Amazing work!! Very unfair scores though. Great shot from all perspectives: Composition: Emaculate with the subject of main interest on to, well-framed one side ...... Lighting: Best-used arctic sunshine with the well-lit up eyes and shadows, only highligting the predator quality of this "bird of prey;" Originality: Stunning & Impressively original unlike "flat portraits many take...care was taken to depict the habitat of the bird, with due respect to DOF as well; Emotional appeal: Unperturbed by the presence of nature photog...unlike some of us who catch and shoot the fright in the subjects' eyes; Overall: Attention to detail of the delicate balance between nature and wildlife, Steve out did himself in this shot! Bravo!!

Just beautiful Steve. Nice clean background...and for once a snowy is doing something other than just sitting there.

Kim, I guess I like the sky because it accentuates that the area is fairly flat. This was on the north slope of the Brooks Range, in the area of ANWR that the Bush administration and his oil chummys want to develop.

What can really be said about this image, other than WOW. The sharpness, the detail of feathers, the intense stare right into the camera... it all adds up into an amazing image. The one thing I would suggest is to try taking a ruler, or piece of paper and cover over the sliver of blue sky at the top and see what you think. I find that after looking at the owl, my eye automatically goes straight for the sky.
Other than that... awesome job.
