another hip-hop/grunge shot. the flat light is a big problem. suggestions on how to do dramatic light, especially hard light that falls off quickly, are very welcome.
i love this one..and i'm gonna be late picking up my daughter just to stay a little longer to tell you why i love it..first, as was already noticed, the black lady in red facing the urinal like a man...gender bending my mind here, then the fragile girl, also in red pants and red lipstick, with the urinal pipe phalically between her legs, hanging on the guy behind her..owwweee..once again, nice mix of characters and great use of the color RED! The suggestion to try PS'ing some light action is a good one. Maybe not authentic but an interesting way to try different light angles and see where you might play with real light next time. Great stuff, James..i love how you tackle a project and keep at it, aiming higher and higher to get it just right. kat~
i like the freshness of your series, it's kind of surprising considering your portofolio. i'm thinking that in order to overcome the flatness of the light you have some freedom of choise between post-processing in PS or maybe some other software(cheaper) or you could make use of 2 flash units-one master with bouncing capabilities and another slave unit that you'll position in some dramatic angle(maybe in conjuction with a small softbox attached).also, colored gels could be usefull for ballancing the overall skintones. regard, s.
are you aiming all your lights int he same spot?? try to have a main light coming in from one side then have a second light directed in anotehr area or maybe bouncing off. I think you're just aiming everything at the models. maybe get 2 different kinds of lights like a strong strobe and a flood. (hey look at that i wasn't totally asleep in my studio light class) hahah
from that picture i'm also thinking light coming from the top but you need to keep in mind that the more light you get the shadows fade more so yeah...that's all i gotta say :)
You are striving for a photo that makes a statement and leaves an impression and in my opinion, you have achieved that here. It is almost disturbing (call me prude) that both sexes are in the urinal together and that the woman in red on far left is facing the urinal as if she is a man. Interesting shot - This one "sticks". Nice job.
