About This was shot at a nature center outside of Atlanta, GA. She was being held by a keeper who was giving a brief talk on predators/prey. I was able to sit next to her -- less than 2 ft. away for about 20 mins. The lighting wasn't the greatest --more or less back/side lit by a window to a clear-to-slightly hazy sky.

Yep. That's the one just down the road from me. Thanks for the info. I'll check into it. I've yet to get out on the docks/walkways they have set up, but the ducks and geese sure are well fed...

Thanks for the comments. :-)

Lighting is probably my biggest challenge. I really prefer to shoot with available light -- flashes just seem too harsh most of the time -- that and I don't have one (other than the on-camera flash, which I avoid like the plague). I think my next investments are going to be in a decent flash (maybe a speedlite?) and a couple of different reflectors -- maybe a silver and a gold.

Would a reflector have worked in this situation instead of fill flash?

Scott, this was taken at the Chatahoochee Nature Center. I spent the afternoon there and shot most of a roll & half. Very nice place. I have a decent shot of the bald eagle they have there that I will post soon (as soon as Karma allows... hehe).

As an Atlanta resident (actually Roswell), I'm wondering what center you went to. The kids would be very interested, and hey, another photo opp. for me... I'm attaching a gratuitous bird shot from the Chatahoochee Nature Preserve. This guy was out in the wild "ground huntiing" last fall and let me get within 8 feet of him (or her). Almost too close for comfort.
As for this shot, looks like the focus is just the slightest bit off on the eye, and fill probobly would have helped. I like the composition a lot.

Nathan,

you capatureda great post and expression. The white around the nose got blown out and the back is to dark.

You need to use a fill flash to fill this image.
