Lee,
I really like this shot.
It is truly a liquid sculpture.
I have just started taking shots of drops
then use them in montages and it is a lot of fun.
I am adding this to favorites.

To freeze this photo perfectly the best way would be with a LONG exposure. If you set your flash on auto and put a white card up against it's sensor it will give a small yet extremely short (approx. 1/20,00) burst. The trick is to leave the camera on B turn off all the lights and fire the flash right when the drop falls in the water. If you get an IR trigger this will help a tremendous amount. Simply set the trigger to go off when the drop crosses the IR beam, adjustments will be necessary but you will get it PERFECT without shooting 400 frames. Check my portfolio for examples of LONG exposure short flash photos.

Btw, great photo!!!!!!

To Neil Dolman and all others that have commented on this photograph.
It was taken almost three years ago in my kitchen at the sink.. I was bored one rainy grey Sunday. I shot over 400 hundred frames to get seven that I kept.
I actually upon looking back; did not know much about what I was doing.
I got the settings all wrong and did not even have Photo Adobe to tweek this shot!
I used an Olmpus 2100UZ which I do not have any longer but praise it's capabilities highly.
I have a Canon D60 and a 10D now with a variety of lens... and I do also use Adobe exclusively..

Nice one Lee, how many attempts did it take? I like the lighting, but was it studio?

Project Long Exposure? Shouldn't the photo be placed in the short exposure catageory? Also the aperature and shutter are reversed. Did you use any lens protection? Great idea for a photo. I'll try it sometime. More details on how to will be appreciated.

yes develop and push on, never give up, just keep on trying, that is the key to photography!

Lee Horn   {K:256} 4/7/2003
Thank you for all your comments on this photo. If I got the apertures and shutter speeds mixed up it is most likely due to my complete "beginner-ism" on this matter. This was shot with a point and shoot Olympus C-2100 UZ and I was trying to get more out of the camera and myself.
I have since moved on to a Canon D60 with three different lens systems and a 10D.
It is back to the beginning for me with no 10x's zoom!
Again I am pleased beyond measure that people appear to like this shot and it gives me courage to push my own envelope even further.

Gisela Francisco   {K:233} 4/7/2003
Shutter: f5.6
Aperture: 1/800

The shutter speed should be 1/800 not the other way around. (same for the aperture...)

Project: 13 - Long Exposure

A LONG EXPOSURE? To shoot this photo you had to make a very short exposure, because this is a speed photo. If you made it with a 1/800 shutter speed, like we can presume from the confused data that you entered it's ok, but it's NOT long exposure. It's rather the contrary.

Regards.

Annika Lund   {K:170} 3/13/2003
Great macrophoto with good sharpness and soft colours.
The only thing I can complain on is that I would like to have more space in the top of the droplet and maybe crop it a little to the left.
Ciao Annika

Thank you for all your interest in this shot. I am trying the manual settings and PATIENCE is the name of the game with this.. I shot over 300 frames and kept thirty.. I have a few others that are frankly rather wonderful(is one allowed to be that way when a strict amatuer?)
I also saw the small grey blemish that one of you mentioned.. you are right it is unsightly.. must re-do it ...later.
Thank you for your comments and interest.
