About I took this photo with nasty overhead lighting. The default portrait settings were used to capture the image. I feel like I need to do something with the background, but I am new to Photoshop, so I don't know where to begin. Please offer any advice you may have ... I am new to photography and want to learn as much as I can from the rest of you.

Ok, here's a valuable tool for such chores:
Instead of using the Dodge or Burn tools, use the brush tool. Set Mode to Soft Light, and with Opacity and Flow turned down to about 30-ish, choose the effect based on your foreground/background colors (those overlapping rectangles at the bottom of the tools palette).
Choosing a foreground color of black will *gently* burn in the area, and toggling that to white will dodge, or lighten the areas brushed.

-hope this helps!

A nice portrait but I prefer your recent shot. I very much like the gentle mood of composition, except the awkward triangle shape in the top left corner of frame is a little distracting. The incandescent colour cast can be controlled with a blue filter as attached (haven't addressed any of the other issues like posterisation etc). You can set the white balance in camera at time of shooting or use the PhotoFilter function in Photoshop CS, or manually correct with channels/curves. I also removed some chroma (colour) noise from the shadow regions with a noise plugin. (zoom in to see difference). In terms of the background, for non-photoart shots I try to get this right when shooting, rather than relying on magic tricks in Photoshop afterwards - which I tend to use mainly for colour/contrast/tone correction rather than manipulation etc.

Does her name happen to be Rupunzle(sp)? She seems very relaxed and I always admire those who can catch somebody in a relaxed state. I feel no tension when I look at this, just peaceful admiration. Nice shot
