Laurie,
The best way to keep the hair visible is with an additional light above and behind the model. It doesn't need to be a strobe, just a way to create a rim / highlight and separate her from the background.
You've got a wonderful eye...keep shooting!

As a father of three, I know all about wanting to 'meet' the newest family member, as they're all unique inviduals. Great photo overall and a superb title.
I think there are a few technical considerations with this shot. Watch the exposure levels, as her hair is disappearing into the background. I'd also include her feet and reduce the head-room.
