Hi Christian, I like the image where you have increased the contrast slightly. I do feel that the small shrub is needed to balance the composition. Very nice work. Don.

I hope you don't find I'm insisting... Here's a 200 k retouched version with higher contrast and local dodging and burning.

OK, it sems that the foot steps are insufficiently drawn. John, I work too with a Mac and a flat 15" monitor. On this work station, I can see them reasonnably well - actually I didn't want them to jump out, because they are not stains, just subtle shadows. But now, I am looking at the image on my iBook and I can barely detect them. I figure that wheter on a 1.8 or a 2.2 gamma monitor, seeing them - at least enough so that they become a focal point - is not garanteed. So I will re-work it and, if you allow, repost it making sure they become more evident.

Well composed Christian. I see you cropped version, & I think that shrub has to stay to balance the image. I like all the whiteness & how it all blends into forever.

Hi Christian, the attached photo is not nearly as compelling as the posted one. I did try this too (Forgot to post it, though) and even on a PC the footprints are quite subtle. I think that if the contrast and level of detail in the snow would have been bigger / larger, the cropped version might have worked too....
Cheers,
Hugo

Looking at this on a Mac which is brighter than a PC, the footprints are extremely subtle. The shrub on the right is critical for holding attention long enough to read the subtext of the footprints. At least on my computer, this secondary element builds upon a simple but effective initial impression. I wouldn't change it at all.

Here is a square crop giving all the attention to the foot steps. How do you react ?
Thanks for your precious comments.

good shot! i think if you crop the shrub away on the right it would have more attention to the footsteps! Try it!

Christian, I think the shrub is a very valuable addition to the composition, as it divides the frame nicely into two, only to be joined by the track in the distance. Without it, the photo would have been too empty, as the level of detail in the snow is pretty low. (it even looks a bit overexposed....)
Cheers,
Hugo
