Thanks to everyone who commented on my original submission of this image! Your comments are definitely encouraging! Since, I'm trying to become a better photographer, I decided take Audrey's advice (you should see her stuff - it's awesome!) and crop out some of the left-hand side of the image as well as a bit of the bottom. Overall, I'm quite pleased with the results. The emphasis does shift more to the girl, while still maintaining the scale of the stairs, which was my original intent. It also adheres more to the rule of thirds, which works well for this image, I think. Additionally, I nudged the contrast just a tiny bit. That also helped make the girl stand out more.
