Muito obrigada Sergio! I value those comments very much and will try all your suggetions. I think I know what you mean by cutting out the sky (I think the colour was a bit off with the scan - the sky is actually pale grey on the photo. I'll try for a lower angle next time (hopefully I'll be able to do that without falling off the bridge :-)!!

Lynda,

at first I tought this photo shouldn?t be in Photo Help. You had a very good eye for the colors and the ambience.
Some details however, IMHO, could be more taken in consideration:

1. If the contrast between the blue water(cold) and the yellow in the trees(warm) is so great why spoil it and confuse it with the pale cyan of the sky?

2. The river in the photo (pictorically) is just a thick blue line so why put it in the midle of the photo. You should compose pictorical elements like that in order to get visual tension. That way the eye is drawned into your subject and doesn't concentrate on the frame itself.
Take a look at this tutorials:
http://www.dpchallenge.com/tutorial.php?TUTORIAL_ID=5
http://www.silverlight.co.uk/tutorials/compose_expose/thirds.html

3. It apears that you are holding your camera as you stand and pointing it straight forward. The river is such a strong subject why not leting us see it from your feet to the horizon? That not only would increase your 'convergence' or your focal point giving a pleasant distortion as it would remove that pale sky.

Hope all this is usefull to you, and I'm looking forward to see the long exposure version you mentioned.

Best regards,
Sérgio

Hermen, thank you! That sounds like a good idea. Maybe I'll do that after a good rainfall when there will be more water activity over the rocks.

This scene would also be nice to try long exposure times (put you camera in shutter priority mode and select a long shutter time.
The flowing water becomes very smooth, which can be an interesting effect.
Of course, you need a tripod, or at least a solid support, to keep your camera still.
