The depth of field is really great in this photo. I also think the tonality of the stump is on the mark. The background is a bit too low contrast for my liking, but it does pull the focus to your subject.

The composition is bothering me a bit, but I'm not exactly sure why. It feels a bit clausterphobic and too tightly cropped for me. Perhaps a bit more space/context would create more of a lonely and broken atmosphere (maybe a horizontal composition?). I also feel you're halfway between showing the actual break and the entire tree (or at least most of it). I think you should be going for one or the other, either getting closer on just the break or choosing a more dynamic (lower? angled?) angle to show the break and the trunk jutting out into the water. The current angle feels a bit flat to me.

Oh, but if only I could expose my black and white photos half as well as you . . . . ;)

I like the composition very much,in my eyes it's well balanced with the curves of the river.there's a beautiful mood with B&W.

The idea and three is very beautifull, so is the choise for B&W. But I do think that the picture could be more 'about' that three. The eye is quickly drawn away from it. Maybe you should put the horizon higher, or take the shot horizontal.
Just a tought.
Tim.

Great tonality here... It?s not only the perfect objects which is interesting. The natural age, getting old and die... thats nature! Lovely nature you have so close to you...

Nice detail and composition. Good use of DOF. I think the vertical composition is very effective here, though I do think it would be slightly more powerful if you changed your position slightly to include to entire fallen tree in the frame.

Great tonal range, contrast and composition. Works good in B&W. Cheers! Carlheinz

Very expressive image. B&W gives it a dark atmosphere/feel. Great depth of field. I always want to see how your photos look in color, but B&W is your taste. Composition is great, although shifting the camera to the left would make a better composition because it would show the whole tree.

Well done...

Thank you Hugo. I do disagree with the crop suggestion here as I feel it would leave the image a little too one-dimensional if you see what I mean. The day was quite overcast and the negative does not have this contrast. In pushing contrast digitally, I was worried that tones were suffering, particularly in parts where you see exposed wood in the tree.

Hi Stefan, Very good shot, the tonal range is excellent, and I like the use of B&W, as it helps to create a very good atmosphere. The title confuses me a bit, though. What I see is a very natural and oof the beaten track landscape, while the tiltle points me to the actual subject, the broken tree. I think the title would be slightly more fitting, if the image was cropped just below the oposite riverbank. The reflection of the trees in the water would tell enough of the scene outside the photo. (Including just a strip of the oppositie riverbank would work as well, I think....) Changing the title is another option, ofcourse. As a landscape, the broken tree adds a very good tension and story to the scene, as it tells the story of other (better times) Very good shot, and, browsing through your portfolio, very impressive work, my compliments.

Cheers,

Hugo

Stefan,

I admire this because I always want to shoot these things and have never determined how to handle them - I like your handling here - poignant and not tooharsh...
